While I have no thoughts as to what caused the original problem, I can give
you a ray of hope for recovering your lost files. Dropbox stores deleted
files and old versions for thirty days. Go to
dropbox.com in your web
browser, sign in, go to the proper folder, then click "Show deleted files."
You should now be able to see and recover your lost files.
