Hello friends,
Thanks to the efforts of some hardworking holiday elves, the first-ever Plains Justice newsletter is out the door by the end of 2007, attached to this email and also posted on our website at:
http://plainsjustice.org/files/Newsletters/PJ_Newsletter_12-31-07.pdfA few things Plains Justice got done in 2007:
- Brought expert witnesses to testify in regulatory proceedings about the economic and environmental superiority of clean energy over coal plants.
- Released a comprehensive report on the risks associated with coal combustion waste disposal in Iowa.
- Organized local advocates for a successful presentation to the Iowa City Development Board and drafted a comprehensive legal brief in opposition to the proposed Waterloo coal plant, resulting in rejection of the annexation proposal by the Board.
- Directly represented farmers in Iowa and North Dakota who are fighting to protect their land from a fossil fuel industry that isn't content with going after the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge and would like to get started in your backyard.
- Partnered with local advocates to defend Theodore Roosevelt National Park in southwestern ND from coal plant proposals within sight of natural wonders like Painted Canyon.
- Worked directly with state officials to promote clean energy policy alternatives.
- Provided environmental law training through internships and clinic work to students from the University of Iowa College of Law, Yale Law School, Coe College, and Cornell College.
- Provided energy policy education in four states through presentations at public meetings, hearings, press events, and web content.
- Organized statewide environmental caucuses, resulting in our 2008 Plains Justice Environmental Platform, a guide for Iowans to pursue strong environmental policy at the local, county, and state level.
-
Co-sponsored a survey showing that Iowans overwhelmingly prefer renewable energy and energy efficiency to new coal-fired power plants.
We look forward to another great year in 2008 with your phenomenal support! Thank you and happy new year!
