There have been 23 Grands Prix at the modern Spa-Francorchamps,
seven have been won from pole position (last was Rikknen in 2007),
four have been won from second (Hkkinen in 2000),
seven have been won from third (Massa in 2008).
Four have been won from a lower grid position - Mansell (1986/5th), Prost
(1987/6th), M Schumacher (1995/16th) and Rikknen (2004/10th).
Average grid position of winners = 3.174.
The old circuit hosted 18 GPs and the AGP of the winners was 3.500.
Note: 2005 was decided on "single lap" qualifying. Since 2007 the grid has been
decided on a three-period knockout system. The "pole time" is no longer
necessarily the fastest time set during qualifying.

However, as the season nears the sharp end, the info, such as it is, is likely to be
more and more useful.
Firstly here is a log of engine changes as recorded by Joe Bauer, the FIA Technical
Delegate, and
published in his Technical Report after each event.

We could assume that once a new engine is introduced, the driver continues to use that
engine
for several consecutive events. However, that assumption might not be correct. This table
assumes that it is correct, so should be examined with caution.

We can assume that engines which 'failed' will not be used subsequently, although it seems
that Mark Webber's engine from Spa, may still be usable.
And here's similar data for gearbox usage:
The same 4-event rule still applies, drivers must use the same gearbox for four
consecutive
events. Any forced gearbox changes will result in a 5-place grid penalty at that event.
Drivers
who fail to finish a race are able to change gearboxes at the next event without penalty.

Note: Luca Badoer's impressive 324.3 kph was logged at 14:19:44, which I estimate was
about 20s into his final lap, although his accident came after the checkered flag, which
should have been at 14:20:00, so perhaps it wasn;t 'during' the accident.
The first table (below) compares the 2008 team/driver combination with the equivalent
2009 team/driver - the same driver if possible, otherwise the 2008 driver is compared
to his 2009 replacement. This comparison is intended as a team comparison, but the first
(driver) table is also of some interest - but should be read with care.

Seventeen drivers managed better top speeds than in 2008.
The second table compares the top speed achieved by each team (IE the top
speed of both drivers), and as such is a better comparison.

Only McLaren were unable to improve. It's worth pointing out that Kovalainen's
2008 top speed was 3.2 kph faster than anyone else, and so may be due to
unusual circumstances.
Taking the positions from table 2 at each race (1 is most improved, 10 is
least improved) and averaging them gives a season average position.

I've slighly reformated table above to keep long line without breaking it.

Thanks.
Q: How does the best lap of the whole weekend (3 practice sessions, 3 qualifying
periods and the race) compare to the best lap of the weekend in 2008?
Here are two tables - one compares driver with driver; easy enough if the same
driver remains in the same team. If not we compare the 2008 driver with the guy
who replaced him.
Note: Honda has morphed into Brawn-Mercedes, while Force India have switched
from Ferrari to Mercedes power.
'S' is the session when the best lap was achieved (P1/P2/P3/Q1/Q2/Q3/R)
'Lps' are the total laps in all sessions
'Diff' is the gain/loss in seconds
'%Diff' is the difference in time as a percentage of the 2008 time
Negative Diff/%Diff mean that the driver/team improved. Positive means they got worse.
There can be several reasons for the variations seen.

Only Luca Badoer was unable to better the equivalent time from 2008. All other drivers
were
considerably faster.
The second table takes the best lap time from both drivers in each team and compares
with the equivalent team last season. Probably a better comparison.
