2008 Best: K Rikknen (Ferrari) 1'20.649
Notes: A whole host of upgrades on show as the circus kicks off the European
tour. A few drivers explored the run offs and gravel traps, but no significant
incidents. Felipe Massa suffered a front wing/wheel problem that saw him sit
out a significant portion of the session. Heikki Kovalainen also suffered
with various 'issues', and spent most of the 90m down at the bottom. So too
did Nick Heidfeld, but both he and team-mate, Robert Kubica, put in very
fast times on the softer tyres late in the session. Nelson Piquet showed
much-improved form, but team-mate Alonso was not as quick.

Notes: Track temp increased by about 10 degrees and the wind changed direction by
180 degrees. Adrian Sutil's Force India had a fuel cell problem and was unable to
take any part. Sebastien Buemi stopped on his out lap with smoke and flames
coming from his brakes. The car was eventually recovered and cleaned up to allow
him to get a few laps at the end of the 90m. Piquet continued to be fast, but
had two excursions into the gravel traps which rather spoiled the overall
impression. Nico Rosberg topped the times for the eighth time in 12 practice
sessions, and this time he was joined at the top by team-mate Nakajima.
BMW Sauber have ditched KERS for this event, and for Monaco. Ferrari, McLaren
and Renault are persevering.
As usual, I probably won't be able to post the times for Practice 3 & Qualifying
tomorrow.
