Weather: Air temp 19, Track temp 21, Humidity 87%, Wind 3.9 mps, Dry/wet/dry
Best in 2008 (P1): 1'12.305 Felipe Massa (Ferrari)
Notes: Toyota's reserve driver, Kamui Kobayashi, replaces Timo Glock, who has a
cracked vertebrae as a result of his Q2 accident at Suzuka. A session of several
parts. For the first 15m only the two Toro Rosso drivers were on track, swapping
fastest laps, then several others came out, with Rikknen, Webber and Hamilton
taking turns to go quickest. By the time half an hour had elapsed 19 of the 20
drivers had set times, an unusual amount of early activity - Romain Grosjean
was the missing man, but he soon joined in, only for the slight drizzle to get
worse and cause a break of about 10m. Jaime Alguersuari did one lap on
intermediate tyres, but then Kovalainen tried slicks and soon everyone else
tried a few laps. Just as it seemed that the action was in full swing Grosjean
caused another break when he demolished a polystyrene marker board. A 10m red-
flag interlude ensued before a hectic 20m under sunny skies and warmer temps.
Most teams switched to the Super-Soft rubber, with Mark Webber heading the
times, a position he improved and held until the end.
Quite a few off-track excursions, partly down to the damp track - Buemi was the
only driver to damage his car, which was recovered under yellow flags.
Note: Practice 2 is at an inconvenient time, so I probably won't post those times.
