Hello,

I'm developing a gallery module to display photos as an image gallery.
The current state can be visited at http://beta.robert-kummer.de/photo_folder/.

I just have to implement a nice lightbox and CSS-Styling. But if
anyone can help me with it just do it.

If anyone wants to have the current sourcecode just let me know.

Greetings,
Robert

Awesome! I was just going to ask if there was something like this, I'm
debating whether to find my own way to show images or use an already
exisiting image gallery thing. This looks like it could be nice, any
chance that you can display thumbnails along with thext for the
gallery name?

Hi Scott, et al -

I finally finished my first Pixie site and want to share the link with everyone:  http://curatorsoffice.com/

I modified the Hello Wiki theme, implemented the Contact, Events, and News modules, used whatknows's Google Analytics block, and worked with whatknows to integrate SimpleViewer generated image galleries into my Pixie pages.  ...Maybe the folks working on the image gallery module might be interested in this last piece?  Also, feel free to check out the code I used to get "all CSS" image rollovers on the artist and exhibition pages.

~Anyway, thanks for the support and the great product!

Cheers,
Kathryn

P.S. --One "next release" suggestion...Because my site has so many pages (102), I found the "browse" style Publish section more time-consuming to use (though i appreciate the nice design).  Needless to say, a good info architecture and work-flow for myself was very important.  :)

...I would love to be able to click on the page from the Settings section and go right into content editing mode (i.e. the display of the pages in the Settings area is more user friendly when managing content on a multiple page site).  Just a suggestion...

Hi Kathryn
First off... love the site. I will feature it in the next site
showcase if that is ok with you? Really like the use of the gallery,
it works well. Are you using static pages for this with the flash code
being placed into the pages?

I cannot believe that your site has 102 pages! thats crazy and I can
imagine it is extremely frustration scrolling through all of those
pages in the Pixie interface. I have had a few ideas on ways to
increase browse speed... would something along the lines of this help:

http://jqueryfordesigners.com/demo/slider-gallery.html

We could have the different page types along the bottom and it should
allow the list to be scanned much easier. Ill have a think on other
ways we can improve this.

Hey Scott,

Ya that's one thing I noticed with Pixie as well, particularly as
Kathryn noted when you have a site with a lot of pages/modules to it.
I mean the ability to "Edit" an entry or a static page on the front of
the site is great but I noticed it's a little time consuming to go to
the back of the admin area to add a new entry. To get around this, I
basically took your code from your static module to display the "Edit"
button, added it to the top of the dynamic module, renamed it to "Add
Entry", and adjusted the output so it creates a URL to create a new
entry (the same URL if you clicked the "Add new Blog entry" button in
the back end of the site under Publish). So far it seems to work
great.

The next thing I'd like to do is to include a referrer check on the
back end add entry page, so it can grab the referring URL and save it.
Then after the entry is saved, I want the system to return me to that
referring URL. So if I was on the front end of my site and clicked the
"Add Entry" link there, after I enter and save it, it would
automatically return me to that same front end page. If I was in the
back area though to start and I clicked the "Add new Blog entry"
button, then after I added and saved the entry, it would return me
back to the same appropriate Publish page in the back. So all in all,
it just returns you to wherever you started from when you clicked the
relevant "Add entry" link.

Hi Nollind
This is a good idea, I will be looking at some of these issues when I
finally getting around to blog about different interface designs I
have in mind... I quite like the approach taken by Logahead:

http://typo.i24.cc/logahead/

Where everything is live editable from the front end... much less need
for a backend and therefore much less need to keep switching
interfaces.

Hey Scott,

Ya Squarespace pretty much works this way (i.e. add & edit via front
end). Note though that one of the annoyances that some people had with
previous versions of Squarespace was the visible "Edit" buttons. In
effect, people obviously liked editing via the front end, yet at the
same time they disliked seeing these "extra interface" elements that
detracted from or spoiled their site design. What I'm probably going
to do is utilize a hover effect in some way, so that add and edit
buttons aren't visible by default but only show when you hover over a
particular area. For example, if you hover over an entry, the hidden
"edit" link will show itself and you can click it. That way, you never
have to log out of your site to see what it looks like from the
perspective of your visitors, nor do you need a "preview" mode which
Squarespace utilizes now.

Nollind

PS. Chyrp allows you to "edit" inline on the front page. It's pretty
cool. However the WYSIWYG functionality (if you use the WYSIWYG
module) is a little flaky and can cause problems. Actually I believe
even Flickr allows you to edit inline in the same way (but without a
WYWISYG mode as well).

Flickr does allow this but without the WYSIWYG... and I think we would
have to have the option if we take this route. With AJAX these days
there is no reason why this cannot be done mostly from the front end.

My current gallery module can be visited at http://beta.robert-kummer.de/gallery/

There is the lightbox implemented.

I've sent the whole file content to Scott, because I am not able to
upload it here.

Thanks Scott - sounds great! Please give credit to Jed (whatknows)
for the slick integration of the SimpleViewer galleries. To your
question, yes, these are static pages with the gallery piece
integrated...It's actually some XML code that embeds the Flash (Jed
can comment more on the specifics; I just did some tweaking and copy/
pasting). : )

~I like the jquery slider...Would be a great help for admins of larger
sites, while still keeping the integrity of your slick design for the
Edit Pages area.

Thanks again!

The current release can be found here: http://robert-kummer.de/files/other/gallery_1.3.0.phps

I added a file prefix to get my htaccess running and making thumbnails
and watermarks on the shown images.

Are you interested in the htaccess and the thumbnail/watermark
scripts?

Hi,
I'm having loads of trouble getting this working, even with the new

It just seems to be cutting out rendering html when it gets to <div

I've never been able to get it working properly. I think I've setup
the files correctly. I can install the module ok, but after this when
I publish the module nothing comes up and the page HTML isn't even
finished.

Hm, I have debugged my version (the 1.3.0) and try to setup it to
another local demopage. No error, nothing went wrong.

Can you debug it your own way?

I'm starting to sort it out. It seems the host I'm using doesn't like
the script.
Could I please have those scripts you were talking about to do
thumbnails etc?
Also something I have noticed, it doesn't have support for non nice
URL's.

Could someone please put instructions on what the file names of the
files need to be, and what the .htaccess info needs to be to get the
"htaccess controlled image manipulation" stated in the .php file.

I've been editing the code trying to figure this out as it has not
worked properly for me since I am testing it in a subdirectory and
this code is meant for (as far as I can tell) a root setup.

Any news on this? I still haven't managed to get it working.

i've done the following:

1) uploaded gallery_1.3.0.phps file to modules folder and renamed it
to gallery_1.3.0.php
2) uploaded htaccess & .script folder
3) created photos folder in files folder
4) uploaded lightbox folder to files folder
5) created subfolder in photos folder
6) created file called descript.ion and placed it subfolder
7) enabled gallery module in pixie admin backend

when i go to mypixiesite/gallery it loads without a 404 error but
nothing appears in the content.
if i go to mypixiesite/gallery/subfolder the same happens
and, by the way, if i go to mypixiesite/gallery/
random_bunch_of_letters it still doesn't give me a 404.

Please help!

cheers,

ok. figured it out!

1) renamed gallery_1.3.0.phps to gallery.php
2) changed the bw_thumbnail.php and and sepia_thumbnail.php files from
the .script folder so that it begins with:

<?php
ini_set("memory_limit","40M");

This is because i was initially getting memory errors. 40M might be
overkill though...

OPTIONAL) i'm not sure whether this bit is needed but the thumbnails
initially would not display. They did display after i renamed the
photos using the photo_ prefix. example: photo_DSC001.jpg. I then
removed the prefix from the photos.

3) Changed the word "Bilder" in gallery.php file to "Photos"

4) Changed from 'photo_max_width' => 500, to 'photo_max_width' =>
1000, in gallery.php file and made sure my photos conformed to this
size.

5) Changed the lightbox options in /files/lightbox/js/lightbox.js to
read:

LightboxOptions = Object.extend({
fileLoadingImage: '/files/lightbox/images/
loading.gif',
fileBottomNavCloseImage: '/files/lightbox/images/closelabel.gif',

8) Done. I think! Hope this helps others...

I tried to download from Pixie, but the download link only takes you

Create a file in your module directory with the name "gallery.php" and
put the whole code in to it.

Well, after some tinkering, I finally got it to work, and it works
pretty good. Is there a way to add subfolders and photos without
haaving to ftp them? Is there some extra snippet I can add to the
module to allow for that from the admin?

Thanks

I take that back, I didn't get it to work. The lightbox feature isn't
working at all. Is anyone monitoring this thread? I'd really like to
get this module to work as it seems like a great add on, and I can't
seem to get my dumb brain around it. Please, someone pull me out of
the mud!

Right now, all I've done is:
uploaded the one php file I got from pixie, gallery_1.3.0.phps (after
renaming it to gallery.php)
downloaded lightbox, made the couple of modifications mentioned in the
gallery file
created the photos folder inside of the files folder
added descript.ion inside the photos folder
created a subfolder in the photos folder
uploaded a photo (.jpg)
installed the module
went to my pixie site gallery and saw that there was a thumb image,
clicked on it, and got an error that said, Photo Folder Missing.

I don't have any special .htaccess file, or any special .script
folder so obviously I don't have a clue what I'm doing or where to go
from here. Please help.

Thanks.

Hi
Unfortunately this is a third party plug-in so I am not sure what to
suggest about the gallery itself, however I can help with the .htacess
file.

The problem with the .htaccess file is that it is hidden on most
operating systems. If you are running the site locally you will need
to make sure your operating system is not hiding files with a "."
prefix. You can find out more about this here: http://www.wise-women.org/tutorials/htaccess/

When you upload your .htaccess it is likely your FTP editor will also
be hiding the file, look for an option like "show hidden files" within
the software and make sure it is checked.

Once you can see it, you can edit the file in a text editor and make
sure it contains something like: http://www.getpixie.co.uk/support/article/manual-installation/
- under creating your .htaccess file!

Well, I was assuming that the .htaccess file mentioned in a previous
post in this thread refered to something speicific to the gallery
mod. I do in fact have the .htaccess file for pixie already in
place.

What about the .script folder I've seen mentioned a couple of times?

Is there anyone here that can help me to get pixie, gallery, and
lightbox to all play nice together?

Thanks.

Well, my apologies. All my crying and winning, and I actually managed
to work everything out on my own. Wasn't as hard as I was making it
out to be. The gallery and lightbox seems to be working just fine
now.

The only thing I can't seem to get around is naming the subfolder.
For some reason, I have to have folder in the name, such as,
folder.something or folder.thisorthat, and it all has to be in lower
case.

Is that normal?

Glad to hear you are getting closer to a working gallery! Robert (the
module developer) does pop in to the forums from time to time so he
might be able to shed some light on the folder issues.
