Any ideas what airplane this is?

This picture was taken sometime around 1944-45. It is a picture of a friends father and uncle, and he is trying to find out what plane they were flying back then.

Any help is appreciated!

My guess is that it is a Stearman C-3B.

Yep.  Stearman C3B powered by a wright J5 engine.  Same type engine on the Spirit of St Louis.  N Number matches a block for these airplanes.  Tail shape, link rods for the ailerons from fuselage up to center section, etc.  There are a few of these still around and active today.  We are restoring a Model 4 stearman, the next design after the 3.
