For years, my bookmark manager was a desktop app called Powermarks.
Its best feature was instant search: You could start typing into the
search field and the list of bookmarks would instantly filter down to
ones containing what I'm typing in its title or tags. Type space and
start typing another word for an 'and' match. Screenshot: http://bit.ly/7C6cUJ

For Delicious there was Delicious Director which did something similar
(but not as well) in Javascript:

but it appears to be defunct. The Delicious Firefox extension has
something like this, but I've found it incredibly slow and it only
matches tags, not titles.

Does anyone else consider this an important feature?

I've not signed up yet: what's the Pinboard search experience? Can I,
say, enter "w3c access" into my search box and retrieve only bookmarks
containing "w3c" AND ("accessibility" OR "accesskeys") anywhere in the
tags, title or description?

I like instant search and think it would be a very powerful feature.
Like other javascripty features, though, it's contingent on finding a
good frontend person and some money to pay him or her with, so I can't
easily predict when we'll be able to add this in.

I remain very interested in hearing from people who are heavy search
users about the kind of queries they find themselves wanting to run.

You can't right now, but that's a fairly easy to fix limitation. The
software we use on the backend (Sphinx) supports all kinds of fancy
queries; it's a matter of properly parsing the search string and
passing it along.

I'll stick this on the short-term tofix list - there are a bunch of
things about search that I think we can improve without sacrificing
the very fast response time.

Just a +1 for 'find as you type' search functionality.

This would make Pinboard hugely more usable for me - and now Google have 'find as you type' on by default it's starting to fell like expected behaviour.

'Find as you type' search is the only reason I still use Evernote desktop client for my notes.... and I'd love to be able to ditch that and move those text notes to Pinboard ;-)

+1 from me too on the 'Find As You Type'.

I've come to expect it on most search boxes and am disappointed when
it is not available (I'm looking at you, IMDB)
