Progress on using the Google App Engine (or what would be a good alternative if not)

Hello,

I have been working as a software engineer for almost 20 years, but I
am new to Python/Django/Pinax.

I am looking at building a Social Networking type website, and would
like to use Pinax to implement this, and if possible for this to run
on top of the Google App Engine.

I have seen the following patch which claims to have most of Django
working on the Google App Engine. http://code.google.com/p/app-engine-patch/.
Has anyone on had a chance to try the code out to see if it provides
enough infrastructure to allow Pinax to run on it?

If it is not possible to run Pinax on the App Engine, could you
suggest alternatives that have been successfully used for implementing
Pinax applications for high-volume websites (i.e. Amazon, or anyone
else).

Kind Regards
Alexander M

Alexander,

Until a future release of Django that supports non relational
databases via the Django ORM, and Google support for such a release,
the Pinax core developers probably won't consider trying to make Pinax
work in GAPE.

Pinax has certainly been used in high volume sites, both in and out of
the cloud. The largest I know of is the Richmond Sentinel which has
nearly 1 million hits a day.

Getting Pinax to run on a large scale is just like getting core Django
to run on a large scale.

You don't want to host a high-volume app on GAE anyhow: http://aralbalkan.com/1504

Django can be run on Amazon services, google will turn up ample guides on how to ste it up.
