I just purchased a Pickit 2 from Sure Electroncs and had all sorts of
problems with it. Very unstable. The main problem was that the
PicKit could not be recognised by Windows XP.

Scouring the web show a mod to the Microchip version to add a resistor
(2.7K ohm) between 5Volts_USB and ground. The purpose is to drain the
capacitors on the board to ensure there is a clean reset on power up.

This worked a treat. Now rock solid.

Is yours a board sandwiched between two pieces of Plexiglas using
standoffs? I've had problems using JUST the right resistor on the mclr
pin. Not a bad unit once that had been fixed.

Why? After you add in shipping and whatever costs of international funds
transfers, is it any less expensive than buying from Microchip?

I suppose it's legal for them to market a clone, even one that appears to be a
direct copy of the PICkit2, but I think Microchip's lawyers might not be real
happy about the violation of their trademarks.

But then that's just me. I have a problem doing business with unethical
companies. (Microsoft, Disney, Sony, Tivo, and numerous others, not in any
particular order.)

Interesting point Jeff.  I putter around with orchid tissue culture as well as PICy things, and have found that EBay immediately removes auctions and store listings whenever somebody complains to them about one of their sellers "stealing" an orchid photo from their (the complainer's) website.  EBay says their policy is to protect the intellectual property of the original photographer (even without the protection of a formal copyright application).

I wonder if anybody ever complained to EBay to protect the intellectual property of actual patent holders!?
