PiKdev is an IDE for the development of PIC based applications
written in C or assembly language.
It runs under Linux/KDE3.x but can be also be used under KDE4 or
GNOME
with the 3.5.x libraries. It is covered by the GPL license and
exists
since 2003.

PiKdev 1.1.0 is now available: It supports the picKit2
programmer via pk2cmd v1.20 (which is just released).
pk2cmd usage with piKdev is totally transparent. It behaves
exactly as other programmers (JDM-TAIT) do, excepted on one point:
the most modern Microchip devices are supported.

I would like to thank the developer of pk2cmd who has accepted to
modify his program to allow to use it from a Graphical User
Interface.

I recently installed piKdev on Ubuntu 8.04. I haven't used it to
develop any projects yet, but it looks promising, and is the main
reason I haven't installed windowsXP on this laptop (PIC development
was the only thing I was missing on Linux.)

I am very glad to hear it will work with my PICKit2.

What is the 'best' (read: widest chip support, most useful libraries)
C compiler for PICs on linux? I am coming from CCS's PIC-C on Win32. I
know they have a linux compiler, but I'm not able to spend another
$200 right now.

I am most interested in 16F88, 876, and 877, although I have been
thinking about a move to 18F parts.
