I've noticed posts from some of you saying that you're seeing
duplicate albums when using the sync feature. I wanted to explain a
bit more on why this might happen.
When Picasa 3 doesn't recognize albums as being the same, it doesn't
sync to the existing album and a new album is created. There are 3
known reasons for duplicate albums:
1. If the album in Picasa Web Albums has a different name from the
album in Picasa 3, we don't sync to it.
2. If the album in Picasa Web Albums contains photos that do not exist
in Picasa 3, we don't sync to it.
3. If the album in Picasa Web Albums contains video files that do not
exist in Picasa 3, we don't sync to it.
On a related note, I wanted to make you aware that we're still
investigating a possible 'duplicate album' issue with sync and albums
that have been uploaded using earlier versions of Picasa. The
workaround for this is to re-upload your albums using Picasa 3. This
is only if one of the above scenarios doesn't apply.
I'm also frustrated that I can't make the default sort order "date".
I'm merging photos from multiple cameras, so the filename doesn't work
like it usually would. I have to keep re-setting it on every album.
If I share an album, then sync it, it takes forever even though there
are no changes.
I have 2 computers I need to share virtual albums between... The files
are located in the same place on both computers, I just need to
transfer the list of photos in each album between them.
I've looked at the .xml, and determined that it is nearly impossible
to generate the right keys needed to migrate or move an album
manually. This is a must-have feature...
I'm looking for alternative software, although I've recommended Picasa
to 40+ people over the last few years.

I am have been uploading duplication albums which I originally
downloaded locally with Picasa 3. I don't know why this is happening
but I have avoided using the sync feature because of this.

My sync feature shows ALL photos are synced but the web album is often
short one photo so I have to manually check which one is missing. This
seems to invalidate the use of sync.

When using Picasa 3 you can now download your complete library of
albums though when syncing any pictures I have viewed are considered
new and are uploaded to a new album (with the same name as the current
album they came from).

I have similar symptoms with duplicate albums, but it seems to be
random whether the problem occurs or not. The problem appears to be
related to the known reasons posted at the top of the thread.
The workflow I've used is to upload a public album, then click "sync
to web". For many albums, this works fine and I have an album with
the right number of photos. Randomly, what happens is that I get a
duplicated non-public album that has a subset of pictures in it. When
I refresh on-line status, the omitted photos are marked as "blocked" -
but I've not blocked them myself! I can unblock them and re-upload
them manually, but if I then refresh on-line status again they get
deleted from the online album and re-marked as blocked, but not
totally consistently - somethings some are OK; most are not.
I can't find any pattern to the omitted pictures, I haven't used *any*
tags, have no video, and all photos are JPEG. I also haven't used any
versions before Picasa 3 . . .
I've also tried clicking "sync to web" without previously uploading an
album and get the same symptoms.
We need some way to "connect" exisitng web albums that were created
from older versions of Picasa. I had to edit a few of my on-line
albums to remove a picture or two, so P3 doesn't recognize it.
Instead, the sync needs to get smarter and allow me to tie up my on-
disk album with my on-web album. If there are discrepancies then do a
diff/merge and allow me get them back in sync. In most cases I've
removed 1 or 2 pictures from the web side and I should have the option
of either deleting the disk side or removing the 'sync' flag for that
picture.

i have always used picasa web albums and just downloaded picasa 3 and
downloaded my photos from the web albums and as soon as i hit the sync
button it duplicated all of my web albums. if i turn off the sync the
duplicate web album goes away. I do hope this is a big issue and is
being worked on.

I did it like this: just re- uploading the albums using picasa 3.This
can take a long time but is the way to solve the duplicate problem.
After this, the sync is working properly with the "re upload" album.
But, really this is the only solution?
Why not try a real sync.. in my case the name on the albums in piacasa
3 are exactly like the names on the web. And i was using picasa 2 to
modify or upload.
thanks,

I just loaded the Beta version... never had a prior version and
Picassa found all my folders with pix and loaded each one TWICE. I
manually deleted 1 of 224... don't want to do this manually. Should I
uninstall beta and download earlier? Should I deleted all of the
synch and try again. Each air of folders has the idential name and
contents. Thanks.

I second this! I have a substantial photo library in Picasa already,
and my blog has numerous embedded slideshows and links to my web
albums. If I use the proposed "work around" (which is to re-upload
the albums using Picasa 3) all of the slidewhos and photo links become
invalid and need to be replaced with links to the new album locations
- a major project. Its frustrating because it should be feasible have
user defined inputs to point a Picasa 3 album to a particular existing
web album. The coding should not be too complicated to do this given
the architecture seems to work once Picasa 3 and web albums are
matched. I think Picasa is fantastic and for a free product I can't
complain... one can always use the sync feature on a go forward only
basis, but it would be nice to be able to apply it to my existing
albums while preserving existing embedded elements and links.

Issue has to be with albums that have been uploaded with earlier
versions of Picasa for me. I'm not sure I want to re-upload all my
albums to be able to sync them- it is easier to just do individual
photos that have editing changes. This is an issue that needs fixed
in Picasa Web Albums or Picasa 3 as the re-upload solution is just way
too much work.

Hi, I have all my albums inside a TrueCrypt container (35GB). I have
formatted my WinXP, that file is in a 2nd partition.
1st.- Picasa3 duplicate all my albums in Picasa Web. To avoid problems
I'm deleting all Picasaweb albums to restart uploading
2nd.- My main problem after Picasa3 installation was (almost all) my
albums showed the button "Save to Disk", "n file(s) edited". (between
1 to 105 pictures each album), very bad, I don't know why is that.
First Picasa3 installation didn't happen (before format).
Note: I have 251 albums/Folders with 12000 photos aprox. 20% uploaded
in the original size. Picasa Web 10GB storage plan.
What is all this about sync? I have spent hours/days trying to
organized my albums. I had Picasa 1,2, & 3..and when I upgraded to
#3...all my pictures were all thrown in individually..not in albums.
what a mess. I don't think I will EVER upgrade again. Now when I get
a picture in an email...and right-click on SAVE...I can't find them in
Picasa..and end up having to go to START/FIND and hunt for them and
then move to Picaca...this is terrible. I used to just click on the
picture and it would go to Picasa. What is wrong? Can anyone tell
me? Thanks. Cherieo

I am still having the duplicate Album issue. I have thousands of
pictures in probably 100 albums that had been uploaded with Picasa 2.
Now, when I try to sync them with Picasa 3, it doesn't recognize that
they are the same, and therefore creates an identical duplicate
album.
As stated by Picasa the Picasa Guide, "On a related note, I wanted to
make you aware that we're still investigating a possible 'duplicate
album' issue with sync and albums that have been uploaded using
earlier versions of Picasa. The workaround for this is to re-upload
your albums using Picasa 3. This is only if one of the above scenarios
doesn't apply."
None of the listed scenarios apply for me.
Any updates? Please?
My concern is that I will go through all this work, and when Picasa
update again, I will have to reupload everything again. Are my fears
unfounded?
I have no used twice as much of my allocated storage space and am
running out... I can't even differentiate the old uploads from the new
ones to delete the albums that are not "synchronised"

I thought this was my solution as well, I spent hours upon hours
deleting albums online and clicking sync in picasa 3. I deleted the
online ones before syncing so that the url wouldn't be [album name]02,
I'm just anal that way. Anyway, I figured I'm going to have to re-
upload and my duplication problem would be solved. My picture library
sits on a network share and unfortunately, my computer went to sleep
with picasa open, which disconnected my mapped drive, which made
picasa look like a ghost town, upon re-connecting to the network and
opening picasa, all the sync icons were missing from my folders and
once again clicking sync duplicates again. This is maddening, right
now, I'd love to never see picasa again, I'm seeking divorce on
grounds of irreconcilable bugs.

Here's what I see guys. Some of my folders are duplicated and some of
my albums are triplicated. The folder I have uploaded to web albums
has a globe on it now in the folders section of Picasa 3. It appears
that the other two folders are the originals and the folder that
contains my saved/non-saved edited versions. Is this what Google
intended? I love Picasa - always have. This is a drastic change.
The biggest problem for me - if this is what Google intended - is that
I have to look closely at the original folder vs. the edited folder to
tell the difference between the two. If this is what they have done,
then one of those two or both need to have a label, such as
"Originals".
