masochism plugin with mod_rails?

Any trick to getting mod_rails to use the masochism plugin? Our app
works great with evented mongrels, but is not working with mod_rails.
We've tracked it down to the app sending database requests to the
wrong databases because it's not using the masochism plugin. I've
tried setting RailsSpawnMethod to conservative with no luck either.
Any suggestions or information would be greatly appreciated.
