That's the global group. The group I'm helping to set up is the
'north' group.

Hello Dawn
There's the international group http://www.linuxchix.org/. I've never been involved with this.
Also a group based in Leeds http://www.geekery.in/leeds/events/2009/12/07/linuxchix-north. I know the founder of this group, Melanie. Since the inaugural meeting in December 2009, the group seems to have died. I'm somewhat reluctant to ask about it as I know that it will be suggested I organise something myself!
Last year, Geek Girls at Madlab organised an event where you learnt to build a computer and I think, to install Linux. I went to the Manchester LUG http://www.manlug.mcc.ac.uk/ for the first time on Saturday. Of around 10 people, I was the only woman, of course. Much of the talk was above my head.
Did you know that there's a php women's group? http://www.phpwomen.org/
I found Friday's DUG meeting very helpful. I have Linux installed on my notebook with a LAMPP environment, and had come unstuck while attempting to make a copy of a live website. Simon and Eli were able to help me. The trouble is, I don't use Linux enough to be very competent.
Best wishes
Jane

It hasn't died. Its just in stasis :-) I've had a bit of a big project on for the last year and its really taken all my strength to concentrate on that leaving not much bandwidth for organising events. The group is still there. The site's URL is.
http://www.linuxchixnorth.org.uk/ and I've recently moved the site on to a new server.
Its not really based in Leeds per se. That's just where I happen to live. Its supposed to cover the whole of the north so if any one wants to organise something the 'wrong' <g> side of the Pennines I will try and help.
I was supposed to be looking at getting an IRC channel up and running. I've been a bit remiss there so I'll look at it this week.

The phpNW group has a high % of women attendees for the type of group.
It's not 50:50 but there are enough women that there is no risk of
"standing out" and the male members of the group don't feel they have
to pass comment or pay too much attention. It's friendly, it's not
macho in it's technical outlook; the focus is on mentoring and
encouraging, this was/is the aim of the group's founder. Some of our
best technical presentations have been given by women. We have quite
an age range in our attendees (single x-box obsessed teen males are
not well represented). I'll admit It's not women only group but I
would hope that the women in the group regard it as woman friendly. If
you are in the area I hope you would give it a go even if its just to
make contact with the women in the group, if you don't like it then
you don't need to go twice.
If you want something more pro-woman than woman friendly you could try
http://www.manchestergirlgeeks.com/ I of course have never been to a
meeting but it sounds like it would be fun.

Hello
First, I would like to say that I thought I was replying to Dawn privately. Had I realised that I was replying to phpnw, I would have worded my email differently.
I do occasionally go to phpnw and have always found it welcoming.
