as I have a bit of free time which means I would like to contribute to

He recommends some good books at the end for learning Python / Scheme, learning either of which would definitely make you a better programmer.

I'm a contributor to joind.in, which is a fairly new, fairly small
project - if you've been to the PHPNW conferences then you'll have
already seen it in action. There is a post on getting started on our
wiki http://wiki.github.com/enygma/joind.in/how-to-contribute so have
a look around there, and feel free to ping me! If you like you can
let me know what kinds of things you're interested in and I can point
you in a useful direction. Jon with his campfiremanager suggestion
and joind.in are two projects that (sometime, time permitting) I'd
like to see working more closely together so if you are the kind of
person that is good with integrating systems, that would be awesome :)
