Subject: Photo Of The Week for March 4th More options (Second Attempt)
Hi Everyone - Thanks to Dave for the invitation to submit my photo.  I
truly
appriciate this opportunity.

I've gone digital almost exactly one year ago. Prior to this
conversion a
ran around with a Pentax Super Program and a 70-210 (f4) nearly
permanantly
attached to my camera.  Yes - I was (am) a confirmed long shooter -
and I
just love to play with shallow DOF.  I nearly always shot BW film and
when I
was shooting bw film it was almost like I could see in Black and
White.

My challenge over the past year is to learn to shoot wide - keep good
perspective and not have everyting look tiny and still keep my bw
vision...

Although my D80 is helping - I can shoot in BW mode (whahoo) - so
what we
have here is an attempt to shoot wide - not have everything all tiny
-
mimich the look of real bw film (tri-x was my fav)  - I also like
dark
images (hey maybe that is a style emerging)

With these thoughts in mind I respectfully submit the following
image.

I like a lot of your b&w work Arne. I have a hard time in general trying to
differentiate film shots from digital most of the time. Processing can
really blur the distinction and more times than not, when I jump to a
conclusion about which it was, I'm wrong!

The tones in this are beautiful. That sign practically leaps out at you.
This is good and bad, though in my opinion. That is where my eyes goes
immediately, wanting to practically ignore the rest of the image. If that
was the intention well done. But I don't find signs to be compelling or to
make a meaningful image. I want to focus on the marina and see more of it.
Perhaps that is just me - because I am a landlubber with a fascination for
all things coastal.

With wanting to see more of the marina, if you'd changed your point of focus
to the boats, the sign would still dominate the field of view and be
disturbing because of the soft focus. I'm not sure if changing the depth on
the image would make a better image or not. I think not. The sign is still
front and large. If you composed the shot differently to reduce the impact
of the sign you'd be introducing other foreground elements to detract from
the overall scene, and have everything looking tiny, which you've said you
are trying to avoid. So I think for the scene you have composed the image is
perfect; and your goal in wanting to recreate the smooth tones of Tri-X is
well done.

Cheers,
Roberta

Hi Arne
Wow! this shot makes me feel what I always feel when I see a marina
and a sign saying 'private, keep out' or words to that effect.  As a
result I think this shot works very well for me. The leading line down
the walkway makes me want to go forward and find out what's going on,
while the large sign makes me stop in my tracks.
It works from that respect.

The overall effect is quite busy, which I think may be a feature of
marina images - they are a busy place.  But it almost feels too busy
with the contrast being as high as it is, and with the activity on the
left of the walkway which is almost extraneous to the 'message' of the
image.

The brightness on the left does balance the impact of the sign, but
perhaps a little too much for my taste.

Your processing to B&W is impeccable, I love the velvety blacks and
the crisp whites, with almost a vignette effect at the edges.  I had
heard that shooting in B&W in camera isn't as 'good' as post
processing an image that way, but you've proven this wrong.  My D50
can't, so I resort to digital darkroom manipulation!!

Overall I think the image and presentation of the image is great,
you've achieved your goal of bringing the sign out and not having tiny
'other' images, and the effect is to make at least me want to move
forward into the image.  Great stuff and thank you for sharing your
part of the world!

Cheers
Bronnie

Hi Arne,
Thanks for sharing a lovely image. Another world for me!:-)
At the first view the image looks very busy. But that's how these places are
I suppose!
The sign has made a prominent impact in the image.

I loved the tone separation in this image. Excellent exposure and PP!
Keep sharing such nice images.

Arne,

A frustrating photo in a good way. I say this because the sign forces
me to
explore the photo. I want to look around and behind. I follow the lead
in
lines down the pier and really want to see more of it. There are many
lead-ins. the railing, the tree line (great), the dock itself. That is
what
I like about this. I stay and keep looking. Love the slight blur of
the
boats in the far back.

Well done!

Kevin

Hi Arne,

I like the image, but I would have went for a more central placement of the
walkway in the frame, that way the lead-in lines would go down the gang
plank towards the water. With the strong lines the eyes would be naturally
drawn towards the point of convergence, the sign would then act as a
secondary element and provide additional interest in the photo.

My own photography usually incorporates very simple composition and colour,
I think that comes from being a graphic designer, I hope to make the viewer
feel calm. It has it merits but it's good to see a photo with elements that
vie for the for the viewers attention. It's a pity that the harbour is so
cluttered it would have been nice if the horizon was made up of clear water
as far as you could see, but that is beyond your control.

I think you have done a wonderful job of the processing of the Black & White
image, there is good tonal range in the photo and I like the shallow DOF.

Good work.

Well I have to say I'm absolutely stumped! I literally cannot make up
my mind with this one, I do and I don't like it. It's a really
interesting view of a mooring and the B&W suits it well with some nice
tones and the blank sky doesn't bother me as there is so much in the
scene to keep you focused within the frame. I like your choice of DoF
with the distant subjects being soft.
But that sign, the sign, THE SIGN, it's really in your face and no
matter how many times I view the picture I keep reading that damn sign
even though I know what it says. Having said that it is an integral
part of the image because it says 'PRIVATE' and blocks off half the
view keeping anything beyond it   private, it simply wouldn't be the
same without it.
I love and hate this picture, and if pictures are meant to provoke any
kind of reaction good or bad then in my book this is a success, better
to make someone feel like this then have them walk straight past.
Well done!!!

Dave.

Sorry, this is partly my fault. I thought we were going every 2 weeks, so I
wasn't in any hurry to ask for the next participant. I think if this is to
continue we'll need others to step up with reminders for the next
participant. With the increase in temperatures I'm outside shooting more,
which means less time inside on the computer!

Cheers,

Hey guys, I subscribed to this group a while back, and feel a little lost.
For example, the last few emails about whošs turn is next etc. I have no
clue what this all means. Not to be critical but if the group were a little
more user friendly to newer members then maybe you would not be short people
for what ever it is you need done right now. I would love to participate in
this group, but I just donšt know how to. There are probably others in the
same situation
