iOS app size after archiving vs Android apk size

I'm preparing a small version update for my app. Initially I wasn't concerned about app size different vs Android apk, but now I have more time so looking into it. 

Android apk size is around 24M, iOS build release size is 27M. After archiving Xcode tells me estimated app store size will be 49.3M. What gives? 

Also, if I choose app protection for Google Play publishing, app size doubles. GPlay support told me it's time to switch to licensing service (http://support.google.com/googleplay/android-developer/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=186113) , but there's no Cordova plugin for that yet.

Actually, after app appeared on the iTunes store (8 days waiting for review, what, but no rejection) it's size is very close to the archived one -- 28.9M. So, all in all, I'm satisfied for not breaking size 3g download size limit

What´s "app protection" from Google that doubles your size?

Here's quote from email from Google Play support

" Copy protection may help prevent applications from being copied from a device. It also increases twice the amount of memory on the phone required to install the application. We expect to deprecate copy protection soon. "

protection?

I mentioned earlier google is moving to app licensing service, for which Phonegap has no plugin (well, there's but compatible with Phonegap 1.0).
