Hello,

encouraged by Yvan Roses's presentation of Phon at the ICPC conference
in York yesterday, I have downloaded the program today (on my Mac OS X
10.5.8.) During installation, I was instructed to also download VLC,
which I did (v. 1.1.10). Unfortunately, whenever I try to run videos/
sound files, Phon says: "Failed to load VLC. Please ensure that VLC is
installed on your computer and is up-to-date. Reason: image not
found." VLC itself, however, works just fine. At the same time, I'm
not really sure the videos are actually uploaded to Phon because they
do not appear anywhere ('number of records' shown in the project
manager window is 0, but when I try to upload them again, it says that
'file already exists'.)

If you have any idea as to what is wrong/what I'm doing wrong, I would
very much appreciate your help.

Best wishes,
-Marta

Dear Marta,
There seems to be a problem with that version of VLC, which Greg, my chief programmer, is currently investigating. In the meantime, my recommendation would be that you try with a previous version of VLC, as follows:

1) Download VLC 1.1.8, at:

http://download.videolan.org/pub/videolan/vlc/1.1.8/macosx/vlc-1.1.8-intel64.dmg

The link is buried deep, path on website is:

VLC Main Page ->
Other Systems and Versions (under download button) ->
Get VLC for Mac OS X ->
Download older versions of VLC media player ->
Older versions can be found by browsing out FTP archive

Which is at:
http://download.videolan.org/pub/videolan/vlc/

2) Use the script application icon in the 1.1.8 "goodies" folder to clear the VLC preferences, then deleted the whole thing, restarted, and downloaded VLC 1.1.8 intel 64 by going in the through the directory.

***Note: the same should hold true if you use VLC 1.1.9 (all the links above can be modified with the 1.1.9 version), however, I have heard of one person who had to backtrack to 1.1.8, hence my instructions with this latter version above***

Things should work from there. If you could please confirm, one way or another, it would be great. In the meantime, we will do anything possible to get everything working smoothly using the latest version of VLC.

With best regards,
Yvan

Dear Marta,

If you downloaded the sample video folder from the childes.psy.cmu.edu server instead of the phon.ling.mun.ca server,
it appears that the version on the CHILDES server was out of date. I have now fixed that. If you downloaded from the MUN server,
then something else must be going on. By the way, I tried using VLC 1.1.10 and it worked fine for me, but I am on OS X 10.6.7.
I see that Yvan suggests trying an earlier version of VLC and maybe that could work for you, but make sure you aren't using the bad version of the demo file.

Hello all,

According to the VLC developers, this issue should have been fixed a few days ago.  From the VLC developer's forums:

The issue was traced back to an incorrect configuration in 1.1.10 builds available for the first 24 hours after publication. Please delete your current installation and download VLC again from videolan.org. This will also free 30 MB on your harddrive.

That being said 1.1.9 does work without issue (tried and tested) - there should be no need to go back to 1.1.8.  Support for 10.5.8 for many applications will end soon I fear.  There are just too many changes between 10.6 and 10.5 now to effectively target both systems and with 10.7 coming out I suspect VLC 1.1.10 may be the last VLC which targets mac os 10.5.

Cheers,

-Greg

Hello again,

Hello again,

I've just sent this message but it doesn't show on the discussion
board, so I'm posting it again and hope you don't get a double
version.

First of all, thanks for your support. I finally had time today to try
to fight the problem - I've tried VLC 1.1.8 32 and 64, and also VLC
1.1.10 Intel 32, reinstalled Phon and VLC several times, restarted
repeatedly, but it still won't work. There was a tiny ray of hope with
VLC 1.1.10 Intel 32, when the message from Phon included information
that it did find the file but the file had wrong architecture
(although I admit I have no idea what that means.) Still, with 1.1.8
32 it didn't work. I've tried both my own videos and the demo.

So, for now, I'm working with audio files only and trying to get used
to Phon, which I'm liking a lot. But if you have any other suggestions
for what I could do to upload videos as well, I'd be very happy.

Best,
-Marta

Hello Marta,

Some technical details:

* Phon requires Java 1.6 which is only available in 64-bit intel
flavors on mac os

* Since Java 1.6 is running in 64-bit, a 64-bit version of VLC is
*required*

* Later versions of VLC have 64-bit support disabled for mac os 10.5.

* The 1.1.10 version of VLC has a library which contains a load
command not available in mac os 10.5. This causes a problem when trying
to load VLC 1.1.10 on mac os 10.5 systems. This load command is not
present in the 1.1.9 and earlier version of VLC. It is likely this will
be the case for future versions of VLC as well.

I've tested the following setup successfully in our lab:
* Mac OS X 10.5.8

* VLC 1.1.9 (32/64 bit universal)
http://download.videolan.org/pub/videolan/vlc/1.1.9/macosx/vlc-1.1.9.dmg

* Phon 1.5.0 patch 2. The link to the universal build of VLC 1.1.9 is:

First, drop your current VLC.app in the Trash. Then download VLC 1.1.9
from the link above and copy the VLC.app in the mounted disk image to
your Applications directory. You can reset your preferences if you wish
using the tool in the 'Goodies' folder of the mounted disk image.

After that Phon should be able to find and load the required files.

Regards,

-Greg
