Hey folks, we could still use some talks for 11/13. Let me know if
you're interested or would like to nominate anyone

If we can't get enough speakers I'll be forced to bore you with a chef talk ;)

talk requests (for a future month):
  • state of ruby orms - including but not limited to ActiveRecord. maybe a joint PUG talk, comparing python orms as well?
  • advanced activerecord talk - perhaps about pain points, especially related to as the codebase gets bigger

  • rails on a non-relational database, walk through a nontrivial sample

I've been doing some ruby work on DynamoDB with Jason recently that sort of pertains to this. Though I still can't say if I'd recommend the approach. :)

I could talk about DynamoDB (with Mat perhaps chiming in) as long as I don't have to prepare slides. Actually, it's hard to beat this presentation on SlideShare, so I could just run through it and provide verbal asterisks on all the stuff where we have real-world experience. Then shoot over to Github for some ruby libraries and take questions.

It's a poor offer and very unclassy to present someone else's deck, but hey, it's all I can offer this week. :)

Ruby 2.0 preview1 was released this week, and would be an interesting topic as well. Has anyone had a chance to explore it yet?

I saw Chris tweet about it. Chris, any report?

Yes, sir.

I very slowly read through Matz's slide deck on Ruby 2.0 on Rails:

I'm still digesting it.

Right now it basically it eliminates a lot of the cruft code that I personally find myself doing a lot.  Like reverse_merge'ing a hash of options in an argument.

Sorry.. I meant in terms of Ruby 2.0-preview1:  I have not personally gone thru the change log or downloaded the repo or anything.

Although, regarding the last message, I wanted to see what 2.0 was going to do to my app.  I made it a personal goal to keep my app and gems fairly up to date. I don't want the app to be supporting 1.9.x forever, you know?

THat's why I was more concerned with the Ruby 2 + Rails changes.  Right now my app is Rails 3.2.6 + Ruby 1.9.3 .. so I'm running up near the top.

Ruby 2,0,0 should be backwards compatible with 1.9.3, and Rails 3.2 is tested against it. Upgrade your app and report any bugs to help out the Ruby/Rails teams.

It sounds like my 10 minute lightning talk has turned into a real
talk? I don't have enough for a "real" talk, so these other things on
Chef or DynamoDB or Ruby 2.0.0 sound like they would be awesome
additions :)

I could give a talk on RubyMotion if people are interested. Have we had one about that yet?

Rather than trying to coalate +1's here's a poll:

require 'civic_duty'

So for whoever put "other" what's the "other"?
