In the 1st Korea Prime Minister Cup, KABA did not require for the
players to have Philippine passport, so Mr. Yong Duck Noh represented
the Philippines. He was ranked 3rd, next only to Korea and China:

Note that during the 1st KPMC, the players who participated were quite
strong: Ondrej Silt, Christian Pop, Ilya Shikshin, etc. So I would
guess that he's pretty much KGS 8-9dan level.

I've heard so much about him, but unfortunately, I've never met him.
When I participated in the 4th KPMC, I think I've been asked 3 times
where that strong Philippine representative is now. I hope I could
play against him tomorrow.

I met him last year. Pero ang galing talaga nya. Gusto ko rin maki-pag-laro sa kanya tomorrow. ^_^ hehe  Goodluck na lang sa akin.

Last Saturday, I played against Mr. Noh with 7-handicap stones but was
still forced to resign. Mr. Izeki suggested to increase the handicap
stones next time. Mr. Noh willingly played games against us. He even
taught us some lessons, particularly a non-joseki sequence following
after a 4-4 kakari (though I barely remember it).

During dinner, we found out a lot about Mr. Noh. He started studying
Go at the age of 24, which should inspire us that we don't need to
start studying Go before 10 to have a chance at becoming a high level
dan. He explained how he got strong. During his first year of learning
Go, he read a lot of Go books. He said in one month, he studied Go 10
hours a day and didn't work. He didn't study in a Go school and didn't
have a mentor. When I showed him a Go book I'm studying now, he
scanned it and said "It's a good book. Study that and 100 more books".
Mr. Noh said he doesn't want to get paid to teach Go, he'll do it for
free. He also wants us to ask questions, show him board positions, and
he'll help with the variations. He doesn't want to be the one thinking
up board positions for us. He said he wants us to play even games with
him, because we'll learn more in even games than in handicap games.
And then he said that if a Go student among us can defeat Mr. Izeki in
an even game, then that student has talent. I hope he means that as a
challenge that if any of us defeats Mr. Izeki, then he may be willing
to teach us personally. He didn't say that explicitly though, so I'm
not really sure.
