Dear Member,
Ian Cuerden has pointed me in the direction
of a review, in yesterday's Times (Feb 25th), of an exhibition celebrating
the work of Herbert Ponting. He was the official photographer for Scott on
the Arctic expeditions, and survived because he did not accompany Scott on the
last leg to the South Pole. His filmed record of the event, "The Great
White Silence" has recently been restored and reissued. Both Ian and I
believe he was an Old Boy (probably in the 1880s), but we have no concrete
evidence. There is a reference to him being an alumnus in
Wikipedia (under "Winckley Square"), but I have no idea whether this source is
reliable. Can anyone help?
