Hi,

During the recent visit to Fulwood Barracks, some of the ‘boys’ and I were discussing past friends, and one in particular – David Anthony Goodenough-Bayly who was at PGS with us from 1952-57.

His two older twin brothers Graham and Aland were prefects at the same time – I remember one of them giving me a hefty slap across the face for giving cheek to another prefect – I probably deserved it.

Our previous enquiries as to the whereabouts of David, or his brothers, had all drawn a blank.

However on this occasion I had invited along a good friend, who has a strong interest in all things connected with the First World War, especially the Somme. He has recently retired as a Detective Superintendent with the Lancashire Constabulary, and on hearing our discussion said, “ That’s an unusual name – there can’t be many of those about. A colleague of mine is Chief Superintendent Richard Goodenough-Bayly stationed in Lancaster, I’ll drop him an email and ask if he’s related”.

He did exactly that, and today informed me that Richard is indeed a relative. He is still in touch with Aland who is in the USA, David is in New Zealand and sadly Graham has passed away. He is going to send Aland my details and ask if he will get in touch – watch this space.

Graham and Alund were indeed twins but apart from their height you
wouldn't believe it. They were at Deepdale Council School (as was)
with me, as were their sister Jean and David. My mother (who was a
teacher) knew their mother quite well. One unfortunate day I was in
town with my parents and my younger sister when we met the Baileys -
Mrs Bailey always had a hairstyle which these days would be described
as a mop-top No 5. We stopped to pass the time of day, at which point
my sister said loudly "That woman's got a man's head". When I joined
BAC in 1966, Alund was in the Drawing Office (Structures, I think) but
he emigrated soon after (I have that effect on folk).
