The Homeless in Our Midst - An American Failure

Please consider joining me in petitioning our legislators to deal with the problems of the homeless described below. Their addresses and a petition are at the end of this document.

The founders of America, when speaking of and for Americans, declared that "they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.--That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed,  . . ."  An American has been wrongfully deprived of the inalienable "rights" of "life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness" when an Amerian has no home, no place where she can sleep safely, no place/locker where he can secure his most important documents and personal treasures, no place where she can sit down and rest safely, no prospect of having something to eat for the day. Can we agree that it is the duty of our elected officials "to secure these rights" for our fellow citizens?
Food, clothing and shelter are essential parts of those inalienable rights, even if the food is only soup, rice, beans with eggs; the clothing is from the recycling thrift store, and the shelter is no more than an unused warehouse or store. The St. Vincent de Paul center in San Diego shows how a food line for the hungry can be maintained and run to meet such needs. Our Judeo-Christian heritage in America tells us that food, clothing and shelter are basic needs that should be met by a country dedicated to securing the right to life for its citizenry.

In my San Diego, the local newspaper declared that there are over 7000 homeless in San Diego County. Shamelessly our State government dumped the mentally ill out on to the streets to die, so the primary responsibility for their minimal care is the responsibility of the State since it caused the problem. Then our governments strongly pressured lenders to make bad loans to people who had no prospect or ability to pay the monthly mortgage payments, so as they lost their homes and jobs they became homeless. Our nation's unemployment rate is over 10%, meaning even more will become homeless and their UIB benefits expire. According to the 12/12/09 SDUT, "California's jobless rate is 12.5%. More than 93,500 [Californians] exhausted available benefits between 09/01 and 11/01 and haven't received a check since." Many of them will be added to the ranks of the homeless. As interest rates rise in 2010 there will be more and more people losing their homes because the rising mortgage payments.

With no address of their own, they often are unable to get welfare or government assistance to help them survive until they can get back on their feet. With no bathroom or shower or laundrying they soon become "unemployable" because they can't get cleaned up for a job interview, or to go to work with a clean body and clothing. For these Americans, their government has failed to "secure these rights" of life for them when they themselves have lost the ability to secure them for themselves.

Having provided some acts of service to the homeless in San Diego I have seen the following. I have seen mothers with small children forced into prostitution or sexual submission to some dominant street male so that they can have food and some protection to survive. These mothers get fatal STDs from these acts of desperation, become unable to care for their children, and often both die silently of sickness and starvation on some sidewalk or alley, their deaths going unreported because they died of "natural causes."  I have seen the elderly and the disabled robbed and beaten in their helplessness by the dominant and predatory homeless, leaving them so depressed and lonely that they go off to some place alone to die unreported deaths of "natural causes" like pneumonia and starvation. I got to know a beautiful and smart AfroAmerian young lady, a college grad who worked as an accountant for going business, who fell on hard times, was unable to get welfare because she had no address, and in desperation and hunger began to "rent her ass" to get money to get food and drink and some clothing. I saw her physically and mentally deteriorate over the years, so that the last time I saw her she was just skeleton and deteriorating muscle, covered with skin on her way to the hospital clinic to get her HIV/HCV/HPV treatment. One of the last times I saw her she was using her ill gained money to buy food for a homeless person who was worse off than her. What a waste of a beautiful, intelligent and potentially productive life!!!!!!!!!!  I have seen  dominant and predatory homeless people make sexual and economic slaves out of those weaker around them, depriving our weaker American brethren of their inalienable right to "Life and Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness."

Desperate homeless people usually have to resort to criminal acts to obtain the food, clothing and shelter they need to survive. These criminal acts cost us taxpayers as our system attempts to deal with the physical, mental and emotional results and consequences of those rapes, robberies, petty theft, vandalism, shake downs, extortions etc.  It is far less expensive to provide food lines and shelters for the homeless than it is to have them in jail. It costs us, the taxpayers, $50,000.00 a year, $4166.00 a month,  and $136.62 a day to keep someone in jail. For the environazis, cynical and hard hearted there is the comfort that the homeless won't live long so they won't be stuck with that expense for long and the population will be reduced. That is unacceptable to any true American patriot who believes our Declaration of Independence and its expressed inalienable right of each American citizen to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.

Until our American government acts to secure these rights for the homeless, I have determined that when I encounter homeless people again in the future, that I am going to do my best to encourage them that if they are hungry and have no prospect of finding food, drink, clothing and shelter, especially if they have small chldren, that they just walk into grocery stores and eat what they need, breaking the law, or walk into $5 dollar stores or thrift stores and take what clothing they need, breaking the law, because at least in jail their government will secure for them the food, clothing and shelter that is their inalienable right as Americans. Yes, just like on the streets, in jail the weaker and the vulnerable will be homosexually abused, intimidated, and bullied into submission, since that is the American way of jailing people now, but at least they will have food, shelter and medical attention to help them cope with the STDs they contract while being abused on the streets or in jail. A significant number of Americans believe it is better to kill a baby in the womb rather than let it land up in American foster care, and many homeless women will have abortions or choose to die of starvation, sickness or exposure with their children, rather than land up in jail with their children being place in foster care. Such American mothers and children have been denied their inalienable "rights to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness" in America.

Please consider joining me in petitioning our elected officials to remedy the homeless situation, using a message like the one that follows:

Dear Elected Official,
Please do what you can to enact laws so that  provision will be made for food, drink, used clothing and temporary shelters for the homeless, especially the aged, disabled, women, and children. Please do what  you can so that there will be food lines where the homeless can have and eat food (e.g. soup, rice, beans, eggs etc) safely, like the one at St. Vincent de Paul in San Diego. Please do what you can to ensure safe, secure and temporary shelters especially for the aged, disabled, women, and children, where they can be safe from the predatory homeless people during the day and night. I am willing to see a one fourth of a cent increase in the sales tax to fund this service, because I believe such a tax would be cheaper for the taxpayer than paying the $50,000.00 a year, $4166.00 a month,  and $136.62 a day cost of having the homeless in prison or jail for stealing food, drink, used clothing or trespassing to find shelter.  Many of these homeless people are of the new godless generation, have no fear of God or Hell, are more violent statistically, and know more of how to do violence to society and property than previous generations and have to be treated differently than in the past.
