You may remember back in July I posted information about Nutro Senior
dog food. A number of my customers reported their dogs were vomiting
or suffering from diahrea, sometimes bloody diahrea. At that time my
store was apparantly the only one reporting this issue. However in the
last little while more complaints have been registered at some of my
companys stores, and from Nutro Senior bought elsewhere.

Efforts to contact Nutro met with failure, messages left but no calls
back.

I don't take any joy out of being the first to act on this. ut as you
will see in this link it is now coming to the fore that Nutro foods,
particularly the Senior dog formula are making the pets of their
customers very ill. I am seriously considering pulling all Nutro
products off my store's shelves.

It is a shame, Nutro used to be a good company, a family founded and
run company. These problems, and I include the cat foods overloaded
with Zinc in this, have emerged only since Nutro was acquired by the
Mars Company. \Make up your own mind about any possible connection.

and read this......It is a list of stories from people whose pets have
become sick and, - very sadly some died -
and a Nutro food was involved in every case.

One more thing. I have a customer who works for Nutro, and when I
talked to her just over a week ago she was totally unaware of these
problems, especially with Senior. She was also astonished I had not
seen a Nutro rep since Mars took over. Apparantly because he lives an
hour and a half away from here it is just too much trouble to drive
all of this way..............never mind that it is his territory. Let
me tell you if he does show up he is going to get an earfull. And he
can take all of those bags of senior from the back of my store with
him when he leaves.

Don't these companies ever learn? :o(

Just pulled this up from Nutro's website:
http://www.nutroproducts.com/press-recall/press-recall.html It's
"old" - but I don't remember hearing about it. :o\ Reminds me of the
beginning of the big recalls though. One itty bit at a time comes out
and they hope no one connects the dots. *sigh*

Franklin, Tennessee (May 21, 2009) -- Today, Nutro Products announced
a voluntary recall of select varieties of NUTRO® NATURAL CHOICE®
COMPLETE CARE® Dry Cat Foods and NUTRO® MAX® Cat Dry Foods with “Best
If Used By Dates” between May 12, 2010 and August 22, 2010. The cat
food is being voluntarily recalled in the United States and ten
additional countries. This recall is due to incorrect levels of zinc
and potassium in our finished product resulting from a production
error by a US-based premix supplier.

Two mineral premixes were affected. One premix contained excessive
levels of zinc and under-supplemented potassium. The second premix
under-supplemented potassium. Both zinc and potassium are essential
nutrients for cats and are added as nutritional supplements to NUTRO®
dry cat food.

This issue was identified during an audit of our documentation from
the supplier. An extensive review confirmed that only these two
premixes were affected. This recall does not affect any NUTRO® dog
food products, wet dog or cat food, or dog and cat treats.

Affected product was distributed to retail customers in all 50 states,
as well as to customers in Canada, Mexico, Japan, Korea, Thailand,
Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, New Zealand, and Israel. We are
working with all of our distributors and retail customers, in both the
US and internationally, to ensure that the recalled products are not
on store shelves. These products should not be sold or distributed
further.

Consumers who have purchased affected product should immediately
discontinue feeding the product to their cats, and switch to another
product with a balanced nutritional profile. While we have received no
consumer complaints related to this issue, cat owners should monitor
their cat for symptoms, including a reduction in appetite or refusal
of food, weight loss, vomiting or diarrhea. If your cat is
experiencing health issues or is pregnant, please contact your
veterinarian.

Consumers who have purchased product affected by this voluntary recall
should return it to their retailer for a full refund or exchange for
another NUTRO® dry cat food product. Cat owners who have more
questions about the recall should call 1-800-833-5330 between the
hours 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM CST

Yes Jean that is the older news release. However the nutro senior thing is more recent. I posted about the Nutro Senior problem here in July, but it is only recently the problem is being reported elsewhere. My head office was baffled at first as to why only our store was getting these
stories. The answer is my employees are trained to ask how the dog or cat is doing on whatever food the customer is buying. That's where we learned of the problem and why I was moved to get it off my shelves. My corporate office recently told me they were now receiving complaints from other stores.

The article for which I posted the url is from Oct 15/09. I am disgusted and distressed it has taken this long to get the word out on this, and many animals have either died or been left with horrendous after effects which will in all likelihood shorten their lives.

O can't wait till the Nutro rep comes in, if he dares to face me that is. His supervisor is getting a call tomorrow.

I'll second that!  I don't buy much chocolate - but there will be no M&M's for a LONG LONG time!  I'm just boggled that these companies learned nothing.  All they had to do was find a couple of websites and they'd have learned that people understand that mistakes happen - they just can't forgive not being told about them immediately.  Yet the companies continue :o(

I just posted another recall for Premium Edge - here I thought I was on all the mailing lists....and yet I hadn't heard about that one either.  Now that you've got me out digging - I'm almost afraid of what I'll find.  3 recalls for Nutro, 1 for Premium Edge...and I've only been at this for a 1/2 hour!!  O.O

I think I passed the word on a bit in July - but this time I got it out to everyone I know and I'll be going through my bookmarks to be sure that I get it out to the blogs and sites that were so instrumental in the Big Recall.

Thank you again!!  And please keep us updated as you learn more!
