THE unemployment rate is expected to hit 5 per cent for the first time
in nearly three years when official Government data is released at
11.30am (AEDT) today.
The impact from the economic slowdown on jobs is likely to intensify
in coming months with the Federal Government predicting a jobless rate
of 5.5 per cent by June this year, rising to 7 per cent 12 months
later.
The gloomy prospects for employment have been highlighted in key
indicators such as job advertisements, which have slumped nearly 40
per cent in the past year.
In January, the unemployment rate jumped to 4.8 per cent from 4.5 per
cent the previous month.
Economists expect the data, to show the number of people employed to
have dropped by around 20,000 in February after increasing by a slim
1200 in January.
