Hi,

I am a writer on the top-level /obo/ and tried creating a subdomain on September 21st (/obo/VariO).

If I do a search for the domain on the OCLC PURL resolver it does not return any result, however if I try and create it again I get a "Create Failed: Conflict (409) Domain: /obo/VariO cannot be created because it already exists."
When I created the subdomain it said "pending approval" so I was not immediately concerned, though I did find odd to need approval for subdomains we own. Reading the FAQ it seems that this should have indeed be immediate:http://purl.oclc.org/docs/faq.html#toc3.9, The PURL resolver should tell you immediately whether or not your subdomain was created successfully.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Melanie

Melanie,

I bounced the server and was able to do the search. Maybe it was in a strange state. Give it another try to confirm it on your end.

I'm not sure the FAQ is correct about automatic subdomain approval. Maybe that's only true for "public" domains?

Hi Jeff,

Just tried again and I still see the same: no result found for domain search, but unable to create it because I already exists. Coincidentally, a colleague of mine mentioned the same issue happened with the domain /obo/opl, which was created by Chris, another /obo/ writer, at least 6 months ago. I tried yesterday and just now for /obo/opl and I have the same behavior. I am on a different machine, so no cache issue. I can see other domains under /obo/, so I don't think there is a permission issue either.

Thanks for looking into this!

Melanie,

Attached is a screenshot from my search for /obo/VariO. The status is marked as approved, which seems to contradict what you’re seeing. The only explanation I can think of is that that you are picking up a cached copy from somewhere.

In contrast, the /obo/opl domain appears to have been tombstoned. The screenshot is attached. My recommendation is to never use tombstoning because the UI doesn’t support untombstoning and it’s a pain for me to undo them on the backend.

Hope this helps.

Jeff

Hi Jeff,

Thanks again for your help. I was able to perform the search thanks to your screenshots. I was doing a search using the "name" field, which returns an empty set. Doing the same search using the "domain id" field as you did did return the expected result - despite its name being /obo/VariO as well. This may indicate some issue on the search by name? See attached screenshots.

The developer who initially requested the /obo/opl (jzheng) did mention that she inadvertently created /obo/opl and tombstoned it - would it be possible for you to untombstone it? Apologies for the hassle. Is there a way to prevent people who are not part of the approved writers group on the /obo/ top level domain to try and create subdomains there? I am not sure how Jie was able to request the /obo/opl domain and subsequently tombstone it as she is not a writer on /obo/

Thanks,
Melanie
