DviX and XivD not present. Tried changing extension to .flv but not
helpful. Perian 1.2.3, Mac OS X 10.6.8, QT 10.0 and QT 7.6.6 used.
Audio present but video not present using Perian 1.2.3. Audio and
video present when using VLC 1.1.12.

We really can't do anything without a sample of a file exhibiting this behavior.

How do I submit a sample?

You could share via dropbox or other similar service if you use that, or post it to an upload service such as http://www.mediafire.com/  We don't need a large file, just a few MB should be enough.

A sample file may be found at http://dl.dropbox.com/u/61963736/no_picture.AVI

This file uses the video codec MJPG (motion jpeg). Perian doesn't directly decode this codec since Apple has provided a codec to do the task. The question is whether Apple's codec cannot decode this video or if insufficient information is provided to it from the avi file for it to do decode.

I can see this appears to be from a camera. What kind of camera is it?

It is a Carcam HD Car P5000 DVR.

How do I have Perian and Apple software work together to play the
file?

I guess I didn't clarify:  I reproduced the problem and I'm posing the question to the list in case any others may know why Apple's codec is not decoding this video.

Version 7.6.9 of QuickTime managed to play both aspects of the AVI out of the box, while 7.7 only audio. The problem is the width is set to 1281 when it's originally 1280, according to MediaInfo. I restored the resolution using a Windows program called abcAVI Tag Editor and version 7.7 was able to display video. I don't what you could use to do this yourself with OS X though.
