It's an Xvid-encoded .avi file (528 x 288) with MPEG Layer 2 (Stereo,
48 kHz). Video playback is fine, but the audio only plays for 2 - 3
seconds before cutting out completely. If I pause, then click play it
will blast again with a short burst of audio that's out of sync, sped
up, and fluttering until it cuts out after 3 seconds.
If need be, I can send you a sample, but this .avi is 488 MB so I'd
need to cut out a manageable-sized chunk (which I'm not sure how to do
yet).
Ran the 1.0 beta and it went fine BUT it seemed to leave the 0.5 version remaining in the earlier default path. Removed it manually and 1.0 seems to work fine on everything I have tried so far but have not tried a matroska yet.

Please do, it would be very helpful. Try "dd if=<file.avi>
count=10000 of=<file-cut.avi>" to cut it down to 5 MB. I suspect that
your file has badly packetized audio, which I don't have any samples
of for mp2 audio.

"Jane-cut.avi.zip" is in the Files area. Good luck, and thanks!
Also, when removing Perian, the prefPane itself wasn't removed.
IMHO, the direct drag-n-drop approach is better..
Chris
However, I too experienced some issues installing using the preference
pane method. After installation, version 0.5 remained in /Library/
QuickTime. I simply extracted what I needed from the package and
manually moved the files myself.
I much prefer the drag and drop method as seen in Perian 0.5, and I
can't say I'm too fond of a preference pane in general unless it's
going to offer selective install of codecs and such.

Anyone can confirm this?
Cheers.
Restart the Finder.
Anyone else can confirm this?
Cheers.

That's not a good solution because then people can lose state on
their Finder windows and so forth. A better solution (IMO) is
probably to recommend logging out and back in.
