I've been trying out beta 1 on various .avi files since this morning.
Installation worked perfectly and it played back all the files I threw
at it except for one.

It's an Xvid-encoded .avi file (528 x 288) with MPEG Layer 2 (Stereo,
48 kHz). Video playback is fine, but the audio only plays for 2 - 3
seconds before cutting out completely. If I pause, then click play it
will blast again with a short burst of audio that's out of sync, sped
up, and fluttering until it cuts out after 3 seconds.

If need be, I can send you a sample, but this .avi is 488 MB so I'd
need to cut out a manageable-sized chunk (which I'm not sure how to do
yet).

Did not get a chance yet to throw too many types of files but did install as well.

Installation went fine, but if selecting install preference pane for current user only then no way to access that preference pane after that, tells user to contact developer. Works fine if installed for all users. (I had this issue with other panes before anyway)

tried on some matroska files, seems to work fine, a bit of chopiness from time to time.

tried to convert those matroska file to AppleTV format using ViddyUp and it really slow. For comparison the same video with same resolution and bitrate from xvid/mp3 to mp4/aac would take 1 hour from mkv(x264)/ac3 to mp4/aac would take 18 hours.

I'm hoping to give it a try on AppleTV this weekend, now that Leopard has been postponed, I won't even bother.

Ran the 1.0 beta and it went fine BUT it seemed to leave the 0.5 version remaining in the earlier default path.  Removed it manually and 1.0 seems to work fine on everything I have tried so far but have not tried a matroska yet.

What does "earlier default path" mean?

Did you install the pref pane for the current user, or for all users.  If the latter, did the installation bring up an authenticate dialog?

Please do, it would be very helpful. Try "dd if=<file.avi>
count=10000 of=<file-cut.avi>" to cut it down to 5 MB. I suspect that
your file has badly packetized audio, which I don't have any samples
of for mp2 audio.

Installed for all users and (as far as I remember) there was no authentication dialog.

Just tried again on another machine with no 0.5 installed.  Ran the pref pane installer for all user and the authentication dialog was displayed.

Another friend who I asked to try it got the same problem.

Here is his message.

Thank you, Rock.

It didn't erase previous version of Perian 0.5 which is in Library/QuickTime.

OK, something interesting happened after I used the command to cut out
a 5 meg chunk. Now the sound plays back completely, but it's out of
sync.

"Jane-cut.avi.zip" is in the Files area. Good luck, and thanks!

Same here. The prefPane didn't remove version 0.5 from /Library/
QuickTime. Had to remove it manually, then the prefPane install worked
correctly.

Also, when removing Perian, the prefPane itself wasn't removed.

IMHO, the direct drag-n-drop approach is better..

We're not going back to drag and drop.

The latest beta seems to be significantly faster loading videos.

However, I too experienced some issues installing using the preference
pane method. After installation, version 0.5 remained in /Library/
QuickTime. I simply extracted what I needed from the package and
manually moved the files myself.

I much prefer the drag and drop method as seen in Perian 0.5, and I
can't say I'm too fond of a preference pane in general unless it's
going to offer selective install of codecs and such.

I too ended up extracting the components manually from the prefPane
package and installing them manually. I suspect many people will
prefer this approach (I dare say it's a little cheeky to install files
in various directories when double-clicking a prefPane - at least with
a pkg you can do Show Files). Perhaps you could provide a symlink to
the components in the dmg (although they are zipped, so I don't know
exactly how this would work in practice...).

No.. you can wait for beta 2 and the original problem with installing
while there is a missing QuickTime directory there will be fixed.

Ok, found a bug in beta 1: previewing movies does no longer work in
finder preview pane.

Anyone can confirm this?

Cheers.

That did it, yes. What if the install script restarts the finder after
perian install?

That's not a good solution because then people can lose state on
their Finder windows and so forth. A better solution (IMO) is
probably to recommend logging out and back in.
