Dear List,

I have tried playing various movies encoded with mpeg2video codec with QT installed with Perian but can only hear audio, the same is true with Nice media player.

However ffmpeg based players such as VLC, ffplay can play those files.

Following is the details of codec extracted from ffmpeg

Duration: 00:00:05.32, start: 0.000000, bitrate: 13721 kb/s
    Stream #0.0(eng): Video: mpeg2video (Main), yuv420p, 720x576 [PAR 16:15 DAR 4:3], 12000 kb/s, 25 fps, 25 tbr, 600 tbn, 50 tbc

    Stream #0.1(eng): Audio: pcm_s16be, 48000 Hz, 1 channels, s16, 768 kb/s
    Metadata:
      creation_time   : 2012-05-11 21:20:17
    Stream #0.2(eng): Audio: pcm_s16be, 48000 Hz, 1 channels, s16, 768 kb/s

Perian says it supports MPEG-2 but wont play this file.. What do I need to do to be able to play it directly with QT without converting it with FFMPEG

Thanks
Nisar

Can you provide a small sample file which exhibits this problem?

I have made some modifications to the file attached and it now plays on Quicktime using Perian but the decoder is not reading the frame order correctly and the resulting output is too jerky.

I changed FourCC property of this file using QT Atom Inspector from mpeg to mp2v (found the solution on another thread) and now Quicktime recognizes this file but like I said not decoding it correctly.

I found QuicktimeMPEG2Component on Apple's site for snowleopard but that too does not play the file alone (Perian still required). However on Lion Quicktime can play this file using the same component (some problems with audio but still...). I cannot upgrade to Lion since I am unfortunately using the unfortunate FCS server which I couldn't manage to install on Lion.

Anyways It would be best if Perian can play it and I am hopeful that it will since it is based on FFMPEG.

Thanks
Nisar
