QuickTime Player X cannot play subtitled movies in Mac OSX Lion

The issue here is that the QuickTime Player X cannot play subtitled
movies in Mac OSX Lion, however if the "Load External Subtitles"
option is ticked off, the movie plays just fine.
The workaround is to un-tick the "Load External Subtitles" option or
to use the Quick Time Player 7, as the message stated upon loading the
movie in Quick Time X : " You need QuickTime Player 7 to open
movie.avi ”.

Any ideas on how to fix this and use Quick Time X with subtitles, as
in Mac OS Snow Leopard?
