http://www.galeriavermelho.com.br

Vermelho, Centro Cultural São Paulo and FUNARTE present, from July 6 to 11, the fifth edition of annual performance festival VERBO.

Since the beginning in 2005, Vermelho works along with other institutions from São Paulo to put together a wide panorama about performance art in a week of presentations, which includes actions and installations by over 50 artists from Brazil and other countries such as Portugal, Spain, Holland and France; launching of artists' books, magazines and DVDs, workshops for creation in the performance field developed in partnership with FUNARTE and an Educational Action including the second edition of the seminar Verbo Conjugado, (Conjugated Verb) organized by Centro Cultural São Paulo and Vermelho.

The actions included on the fifth edition of VERBO were selected through careful analysis of the 320 projects sent to Vermelho from December 2008 to March 2009. Ten were the actions selected to be part of the performance show. VERBO 2009 also counts with a selection of works that appropriate of the dynamic of the game to establish a direct contact with the observer. CASINO presents works by Axel Straschnoy (Argentina), Ícaro Zorbar (Colombia), Anne Durez (France), Marcio Banfi, Laerte Ramos, João Loureiro, Cris Bierrenbach, Elida Tessler, Carla Zaccagnini, Marilá Dardot (Brazil), among others.

A great closure party will take place on Saturday, July 11th, starting at 16h at the FUNARTE building - Alameda Nothmann, nº 1.058 – Campos Elíseos – São Paulo – SP

The Actions

Galeria Vermelho

Ana Montenegro and Edgar Ulisses (Brazil), performers who have already participated in previous editions of Verbo, will present their most recent piece named Encontro na miragem do outro (Meeting at the other's mirage -2009). The action reflects the search, on the infinity, of the meeting point among relations.

A 1,90 meters high and 16 meters long wall of concrete bricks will be built in the presence of the viewers during the performance Muro em diagonal - metáforas espaciais com experiência concreta (Diagonal Wall - space metaphors with concrete experience, 2009), by Carolina Mendonça and Bruno Freire (Brazil). The action that will divide Vermelho's front yard from side to side intends to transform the public circulation as well as the perception experience of the space.

With A Maldição de Ford – homenagem a f? (Ford's Curse - tribute to f?, 2009), the performer Daniel Fagundes (Brazil) returns to VERBO as a conductor of an orchestra composed of over 20 artists, among performers and musicians, and ten cars of varied brands parked at Vermelho's front yard. From a platform, Fagundes will conduct the piece entitled “Divertimento para dez carros” (Divertissement for ten cars), with seven movements and 38 minutes long.

Brasília, e as Maravilhosas Cascatas De Iguaçu (Brasilia and the Wonderful Iguaçu Falls, 2009) mixes cinema and performance. The cinema projection techniques of rear-screen, playback, voice-off and sound band will all be executed live by the characters of the film shot by Gabriel Abrantes (Portugal) in Brazil. The title of the film is the same as the performance to be presented at VERBO.

In Tentativa de evocar o espírito de Joseph Beuys ao redor deste espaço (Attempt to evoke Joseph's Beuys spirit around this space, 2009), the young artist Guilherme Peters (Brazil) creates a humorous action about the influence of Beuys works' in contemporary art. Peters employs materials such as animal fat, felt and copper, adding street culture elements to them.

Delivery (2009), by Laura Huzak Andreato (Brazil), is a stage landscape at the gallery's yard that approaches the aesthetic and efficiency of marketing campaigns that are created by local stores, their names and products.

Those who walk by Rua Augusta area in São Paulo must have already noticed some small stickers, most of them very simple, that appear in pedestrian signs, shaped as frogs or submarines. These interventions of the grupoArac, in public or private spaces, create cracks in perception since they break the visual familiarity we experience at places where we normally circulate. Canned Attack (2009) is the performance title grupoArac will present in VERBO 2009. GrupoArac is composed of four people, "a curator, a frustrated artist, a layman and a guinea pig artist", whose only name will be revealed to public. The rules guiding the actions of grupoArac are of games. Canned Attack is a game proposition between the "guinea pig artist" Eli Golande and the audience.

Composed by artists Rafael Lamata and Jaime Vallaure (Spain), the Los Torreznos duo develops conceptual explorations on social, political and custom fields. Their source point is the most concrete reality. They have worked together in other groups such as Zona de Acción Temporal and El Circo Interior Bruto, having created Los Torreznos in 2000. For VERBO 2009, the duo will show La Cultura (The Culture, 2006) and El Dinero (The Money, 2008). Both actions criticize the territory where we move, culture, in a realistic and humorous way.

Nezaket Ekici was born in 1970 at Kirsehir (Turkey) and currently lives and works in Stuttgart and Berlin (Germany).  Permanent Words (2009) is an original action proposed by Ekici for the 2009 edition of VERBO, in which the artist comments on the role of women in Islamic societies, emphasizing repression and lack of freedom.

Created in 2001 by artist Anno Dijkstra (Holland), Body Hit employs special effects of cinema to simulate the impact of bullet in the artist's body.

Moving through a amongst a matrix of live electronic curiosa, a performer, a fictional radio species divines samples from diverse sources; tap shoes, glitches, break beats, noise, broken-up lyrics and abstract movements make sounds like a radio transmission coming from elsewhere.. maybe even as far as Tasmania.... A playful ode to the history of paraphernalia. paraphernalia: dances with her shadow by Nancy Mauro-Flude (Australia/ Holand) is about the embodied connection with electronic medium. a poetic account of how we engage with these fictional radio species, how we are turning into a different radio species created by regular habitual use of different communication systems: GSM, Blue tooth, RFIID, digital media broadcasting, wi-fi. These radio transmissions are a new kind of species that are existing with us.

Annie Vigier and Franck Apertet develop to the Les Gens d”Uterpan since 2005 a series of choreographic protocols, in partnership with the Contemporary Art Centre of Bretigny (France), that interrogate the boundaries between dance and visual arts. X-Events was the title given by the duo to the series of protocols, here taken as objects that work as autonomous units according to the presentation spaces. X-Event 2 was integrated by the committee of the year of France in Brazil and counts with the participation of five dancers. It will be performed twice in this edition of VERBO (at Galeria Vermelho), and once, on July 12th, 17h, at Centro Cultural São Paulo (CCSP), where they will explore the entire Flavio de Carvalho floor.

Carta (Letter, 2009) is the title of the new performance by Maurício Ianês, Brazilian artist who participated in the last Sao Paulo Biennial (2008) with the performance A Bondade de Estranhos (The Kindness of Strangers, 2008). He spent 13 days within the institution building living on donations by the exhibition visitors. Carta continues Ianês' research on language, by using texts and quotes of writers, critics and philosophers in their original versions and creates with the viewer, who will be able to interfere in the action, a fragmented dialogue mediated by an interpreter. Besides Carta Ianês is also presenting Monólogopedra (Stonemonologue, 2008).

Marco Paulo Rolla is one of the most representative active Brazilian artists in the performance scene. For his first participation in VERBO, the artist created the performance Suando e Resistindo (Sweating and Resisting, 2009) where he and other two performers will compose a choir of voices mixed with the sound of domestic objects breaking.

Since the beginning of VERBO, in 2005, the Brazilian dancer, choreographer and teacher Rose Akras (resident in Amsterdam, Holland) has been part of the event through actions that extend the dance field, tearing apart the chain of linear, continuous and contiguous movements from internal body experiences. In Similitude (2009), Akras get together with Brazilian visual artist also resident in Amsterdam Célio Braga to create an investigation on the body statute in Art History. To do so, the duo uses concepts related to mimicry; simulated actions that develop into issues where identity, difference, attraction and spatial immersion are incorporated in the performance process.

TIJUANA / VERMELHO

Magazine MARTE # 3 / “What do we talk about when we talk about performance?” was the question that oriented the research of the Faculdade de Belas Artes senior students of Universidade de Lisboa, coordinated by Liliana Coutinho in the creation of this issue of MARTE Magazine. According to Coutinho, this edition intends to discuss how and why is the body a legitimate field of political action - through texts, interviews, reports and works especially developed for this publication - since contemporary performance is related to issues from other artistic disciplines and also with a critical exploration of manners of organizing and living together. As part of the book launch that is to take place in TIJUANA (Galeria Vermelho) during the opening of VERBO, Liliana Coutinho, editorial coordinator of the project, and Lucia Prancha will make a presentation about this project and the contemporary performance scene in Portugal. Along with MARTE # 3 - What do we talk about when we talk about performance?, MARTE # 1 - The new in Art Today, and MARTE # 2  - Legitimate in Art will be available for purchase at TIJUANA.

The descriptions compilation O Performer, by Fabio Morais, was presented at VERBO's first edition, in 2005. The piece is composed of around 16 descriptions of imaginary actions created by Morais and was presented as wall posters that were replaced daily. For VERBO 2009, Morais developed an edition of 100 bind copies of O Performer to be launched at the opening of the show, at TIJUANA.

The two first DVDs with compilations of performances by artists Maurício Ianês and Marco Paulo Rolla will also be launched at the VERBO opening, as an experimental documental project with graphic design by CAMPO. This project is not limited to artists represented by Vermelho, and soon will bring compilations by other artists and groups.

Workshops

FUNARTE

The FUNARTE, the most recent partner of VERBO, will host three workshops free of charge that will be held by Rose Akras, Marco Paulo Rolla and Tal Haddad. Experienced in dance, visual art and music, respectively, each one of the three artists will provide distinct views on creation processes according to their background.

Marco Paulo Rolla (Belo Horizonte – Brazil)

Period: July 6, 7 and 8, 2009, from 11 to 14hs

Performance embraces an interdisciplinary dimension that allows people from different artistic disciplines and other production fields in society to get involved. Therefore, it is able to provoke diverse experiences that renovate artistic, educational and professional practices. The performance field deals with different expressive forms, promoting dialogues among them. Due to its measureless permeability, performance can multiply the possibilities of enlarging visual praxis in the artistic field. It is addressed to artists and general public. Maximum of 15 participants.

Rose Akras (Amsterdam – Holland)

Period: July 9, 10 and 11, 2009, from 11 to 14hs

In a moment when Performance proliferates and creators from many disciplines tend to name their work as performance, it seems relevant to reflect upon issues of presence and representation, perception and incorporation and the communication among body and space, artist and audience. Unlike theater or dance, in a performance both artist and audience share the same space plan, what makes this relation much more immediate. This proximity presents issues similar to the relation of observer and observed and gives any gesture, as subtle as it may be, a great importance in the reading of the piece. It is addressed to dancers, performers, visual artists and general public. Maximum of 15 participants.

Tal Hadad (Paris – France)

Period: July 8, 9, 10 and 11, 2009, from 11 to 18hs

Aparelhagens da Cidade intends to introduce the tecnobrega experience from Para (Brazil) in big metropolises as São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro. Participants are to explore and exploit the potential of the musical and architecture practices in the urban environment. They are invited to investigate the social and musical habits from the periphery culture to push its potential to conceptualize urban developed ideas. Participant’s proposals and ideas may materialize into furniture, objects or architectural elements. The workshop intends to create a debate on sound and architecture through sound elements and the musical culture in the city in order to create symbolic urban environments. The workshop closure is on Saturday, July 11, with a presentation of a performance resulting of the processes developed during the week. It is addressed to students, visual artists, architects, performers and general public. Maximum of 7 participants, also open to listeners.
