When I try to reply to a message in gmail using the "new" compose window, the text box for the body of the message loses focus.

This doesn't happen when composing a new message because the focus, naturally, goes to the "to" section.

I've tried despotic, laissez faire, etc... anyone else experiencing this problem?

Same here, composing works but when replying a message reply
window/area takes the focus for a second then loses it. Also tried
various strictfocus settings nothing worked.

This new compose thing just broke my Gmail experience with Penta in a
lot of ways so I decided I'm moving to another solution as soon as I
have free time.

For now I'm just using the good old (and faded to death) compose.

Does anyone have any idea if this can be fixed or how?

I don't know how to fix it for good, but if you pop out the reply window this behavior seems to stop.  I was experiencing it whenever using punctuation, number keys, or number keypad in the reply box.  Testing so far cannot duplicate it in the popped-out reply window.

Click the down arrow to the left of the To field and select 'pop out reply'
