I just posted this issue to the Issues tracker. Not sure if anyone
else is experiencing this, but it seems that a lot of the SVG export
errors are related to the stencils... that is using the older stencils
in the newer version of Pencil.

It would be great if Pencil can be fully backwards compatible -- I am
now looking at the possibility of having to redo my entire designs to
remove the older stencils !!

See here for details:
http://code.google.com/p/evoluspencil/issues/detail?id=390

I regenerated the Native GUI Widgets stencil from an older version of
Pencil. I needed to do this because it was not provided in any of the
evolus downloads, and my designs use that stencil. When I try to
export a diagram that uses the Group Box element, I get this error. I
have attached all the necessary files to reproduce.

XML Parsing Error:
Location: file///users/mountaintop/Library/Caches/TemporaryItems/
raster-389913.svg
Line Number 12, Column 274

Cheers,

John

Hi,

Could you try it again with the last version 1.3.3 that was just released by An ?

Thanks Fred !

Tried version 1.3.3, it fixes other bugs, but no luck with fixing the
export issues. It still fails to export a document that uses the
Group Box element in the Native UI Widgets stencil.

I believe that this same issue is what is causing so many pencil users
to experience exporting problems. That is, there are stencils that
are not fully supported, and will fail during export.

This is a very critical issue !!

Hi Fred,

I just installed 1.3.3 (dmg version) and tried it with the Native.GUI
Stencil and no luck. It still throws the SVG rendering error.

I think that the exporting errors that so many people are experiencing
are related to the stencil they are using... that is, some stencils
fail and others don't.

And it is most likely worse for people who were using Pencil before,
since they are most likely using older stencils. Which is why many of
the new users don't see the same problem.

This is a pretty big problem for me, it would take me quite a long
time to rebuild my entire designs to replace the stencil elements with
alternatives.

Thanks so much on the update... still a step forward.

Cheers,

John

Hi John,

I'm now is the same situation :-/

I'm trying to edit a big pencil file where I used the Windows XP collection that was provided by default with Pencil 1.2. Elements are not editable any more (since Pencil 1.3 don't know how to handle with)

I would be in favour of a new Pencil version with GTK, Native and Windows XP collections installed by default OR downloadable separately from the project repository.

Last update of the story:

I found how to modify it in order to edit my old  wireframe documents .. .

Instructions concerns the standalone version.

1. download the pencil fix attached to this message
2. copy collections Gtk.GUI, Native.Gui and WindowsXP-GUI under Pencil\app\content\pencil\stencil
3. replace the file collectionManager.js (located under Pencil\app\content\pencil\definition ) by the one provided in the zip - basically, I delete the comments in front of lines 95, 96 an 97
4. relaunch pencil

Collections should be there!

Important: use it at your own risk since I don't know why collections was removed from 1.3.

Hey Fred,

I wish I would have seen your post from Jan 12th. That is exactly
what I had to do.

In my current installation, I have all the stencils you mentioned -- i
don't know why they were removed after 1.2, and are not available for
download on the website.
I tried uploading them to the website, but I don't have permission to
upload there.

Bottom line is that .. I agree with you. Those stencils should be
bundled with the installation -- to make everyone's life a lot
simpler.

Nevertheless, even after loading these stencils, the application still
crashes with that SVG error when I try to do an export.

So for the time being, I cannot export from Pencil -- my other option
is to rebuild my entire document, but this would be an absurdly
unproductive task. For now, I am just sharing the document with the
team.

I am concerned though, that no one seems to be responding to these
issues, and I have no idea if they will ever be fixed.

Do you also experience the same export problems ?

John

Hi John,

This problem sound familiar. I had this issue some months ago - Duong An found the solution. I'll dig in my messages history and come back to you.
