How should we setup the group settings to prevent spam?

Currently I only have private google groups, where I invite people to
join, so I don't know what the best practises are for "open groups"...
or should we change this to a closed one?

I am not totally aware of how this generally works.  My guess is that
the erlang-questions mailing list is actually done through
sourceforge, but works as a google group because of google's
integration efforts.  Then all emails must be approved, but once a
user is determined to be not-spam, they are added to a list of users
to allow through, without being approved.  Perhaps this type of
approval can exist only within the google group interface... but it
seems much simpler than the sourceforge mailing list interface.

That could allow the group to be public while blocking all the typical
spam.
