Haig-Thomas/Hughes-Onslow engagement

_The engagement was announced 13 March 2010 between Edward David Haig-
Thomas (b 1972), youngest son of Anthony Haig-Thomas, of Kirby-le-
Soken, Essex, by his wife ____nee Wilkinson, and Sophie Anne Rose
Hughes-Onslow (b1974), scion of the Earls of Onslow (cr UK 1801), only
daughter of Denzil Jamie Hughes-Onslow (b 1939), of Culworth,
Oxfordshire, by his wife Chloe Elizabeth.

Is Mr Haig-Thomas connected to the same family who married into the
family of the Normanton Earls, and Barons St Oswald? I'll check when I
can access my vols.

I think there is a connection. Peter Haig-Thomas (d 1959) m 2ndly 1917
(div 1951) Lady Alexandra AGAR (1897-1971) dau of 4th Earl of
Normanton and had further issue.

I surmise Peter had, by his first wife, a son David (d before 1946)
who married Nancy Catherine (d 1994) dau of Lindsay Edward BURY CBE.
Their son is Anthony Haig-Thomas, father of the above, who married
c1968 [Times engagement notice 15.2.68] Julia Anne dau of Lt-Col
Michael WILKINSON of The Old Rectory, Norbury, Stafford. Their twin
sons [Times birth notice 31.5.72] Alexander and Edward were born on 28
May 1972 and were brothers for Hannah and Rose.

Nancy Catherine (Mrs David Haig-Thomas) married 2ndly 1946 (when a
widow) Maj (Wilfred) Jasper BACKHOUSE MBE (1913-80), scion of the
Backhouse Bts, and their only son Joseph Lindsay Backhouse (b 1953) is
currently last in line to the baronetcy (he m in 2002 the mother of
his only child, a dau b in 2000).
