From WABA:  WABA has learned that the Trump Administration will be attempting to destroy and remove the Cherry Blossom Bike Lane on Monday, March 23.

This is the heavily used bike lane that runs across the Mall from the 14th Street Bridge past the Jefferson Memorial and the Cherry Trees to the Holocaust Museum and to the African-American History Museum at Constitution Avenue and 15th Street.

The District of Columbia does not support the removal of any bike lanes. However, since this lane is on National Park Service land, it is under the control of the Trump Administration.

This action is unwarranted and illegal. The Washington Area Bicyclist Association will not allow it to happen, and we invite you to join us in solidarity.

There will be a rally and demonstration at 12 noon on March 23rd at the corner of 15th Street and Independence Avenue on the National Mall. Please come, with or without a bicycle, scooter or wheelchair. Closest Metro station (3 blocks) is Smithsonian.

WABA members will be along the corridor all morning as well.  Please help spread the word as this was just learned today.

If you can't make it on Monday, Hill Family biking is holding a protest ride on Sunday: https://hillfamilybiking.org/events/2026-03-22-15th-protest-ride/

Getting folks out on the street is really important.  In this case showing a lot of resistance early on can help stop the feds from making a big mistake.  They are slow learners, for sure, but we've seen them start to respond by backing down in other areas.

The Washington Post posted an excellent story about it this afternoon and they were able to illustrate it with photos from the protest held a few weeks ago.   https://wapo.st/4uOy2Kn

Hope to see you there!

Yes, I'll be there.   Not because this administration cares one iota about protests or human life, but the fact the bike lane reduced fatalities in the section by 90% is staggering. Also, since this administration doesn't care about the minor distraction of illegalities, in case they go ahead with the tear down, we'll be justified to cycle en masse with every blinking light we own during the Cherry Blossom Festival and orange face's theatrical 250 celebrations.

Hope lots of you all can join me in taking a long lunch or skip your otherwise normally scheduled activities for this, too.

That's great, Mariette! Im going to both protests (lots of cute kids o the Hill ride).  The feds would never admit it, but the sand we are throwing in their gears is having a cumulative effect.  And the fact that the mayor said something on our side is huge - she's been a quisling from day one but persistent pushback from thousands of her constituents is giving her an ounce of courage.

Very good wapo article (gift): https://wapo.st/3NEuh9x

See you there!
