NEW DELHI: To reverse brain drain, provide an academic opportunity in
the subcontinent and promote a sense of South Asian community, a plan
first mooted in 2005 is finally and quietly taking shape — in the form
of the first truly international university being set up by eight
nations. Tax-free dollar salaries for an international faculty, a
variety of multi-disciplinary courses focused on research, a
multinational exam for admission, an academic environment free of
directions from Commissions, and a think tank to ponder over the
shared problems of the subcontinent — these will be the key features
of the South Asian University (SAU) being set up by SAARC nations.
The university, headed by former JNU V-C Prof G K Chadha — once a
student of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh — will start operating
between August 2010 and January 2011, offering postgraduate courses in
economics, computer applications and biotechnology…

New Delhi, Jan 15: After his doctrine of two-front war with Pakistan
and China drew flak from across the border, Army Chief General Deepak
Kapoor Friday said India wanted to foster “cordial and peaceful
relations” with both the nations…“With China, we want to continue
peace. We want cordial relations and peace with Pakistan too,” he said
after reviewing the Army Day Parade…

ISLAMABAD, Jan 15 (APP): Minister for Information and Broadcasting,
Qamar Zaman Kaira Friday said there is a need to change the mindset
that causes extremism, emphasizing for collective efforts to overcome
the national challenges including scourge of terrorism.“All sections
of society including media have to work together to effectively meet
the challenges, save the national institutions and promote democratic
system that is imperative for progress and development of the
country,” he said while addressing the launching ceremony of a week
long media fellowship course…

New Delhi, Jan 15: Government of India has decided to remove several
thousand troops from Jammu and Kashmir and the troop cut is likely to
begin this month, a report published in the Virginia-based influential
Defence News said Friday…The troop reduction will begin this month,
the report said, adding that the paramilitary forces there will take
over from the troops…

DHAKA: India is considering setting up a joint forum with Bangladesh
for protecting the ecosystem of the Sundarbans and dealing with issues
related to its eco-management. After a meeting with West Bengal Chief
Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee in Kolkata, Indian Environment and
Forest Minister Jairam Ramesh on Wednesday said he has started a
dialogue to form a join forum to protect the bio-diversity of the
Sundarbans…

COLOMBO: Sri Lankan state trading firm has imported a stock of rice
from Pakistan as domestic prices shot up in a market mired in heavy
handed state intervention. Consumer affairs minister Bandula
Gunewardene says a 5,000 tonne stock of IRI-6 white raw rice imported
from Pakistan would be sold through some 11,000 co-operative outlets…
