Two leading Pakistani organisations have announced that they will
immediately resume the exchange of delegations with India [ Images ]
and proposed the creation of a joint commission to combat the threat
of extremism in the region…A delegation of Pakistani writers,
intellectuals, artists and educationists will visit the Patiala
University later this month while another team will travel to Amritsar
[ Images ], Chandigarh, Patiala and New Delhi [ Images ] in February
as part of efforts to resume people-to-people contacts, he said…

Believing that people-to-people initiatives can help cement peaceful
relations between India and Pakistan is one thing, but exactly what
would the nuts and bolts of such interaction be?...Aman ki Asha polled
people in the two countries to get the answers to these questions and
came up with some unexpected responses. The most surprising finding
was how low cultural exchanges — through movies and films, for
instance — rank in terms of being perceived as important ways in which
to foster harmony and peace…

NEW DELHI: India and Bangladesh on Monday signed five pacts in the
presence of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and his counterpart, Sheikh
Hasina, to add impetus to the bilateral ties that had been on the
upswing since the last one year…The five agreements relate to mutual
legal assistance in criminal matters, transfer of sentenced persons,
fight against terror, organised crime and illegal drug trafficking,
power cooperation and cultural exchange programmes…

COLOMBO: India and Sri Lanka on Monday signed commercial agreement for
the construction of the railway line between Omanthai and Pallai in
the war-torn Northern Province. A press statement by the Indian High
Commission said that the pact was signed at the Ministry of Transport
in the presence of the Sri Lanka’s Minister of Transport Dullas
Alahapperuma and the High Commissioner of India Ashok K. Kantha and on
behalf of IRCON International (a Government of India Undertaking which
will construct the railway line) by S.L. Gupta and on behalf of Sri
Lanka Railways by P.P. Wijesekara…

KABUL: Most Afghans are increasingly optimistic about the state of
their country, a poll commissioned by the BBC, ABC News and Germany's
ARD shows. Of more than 1,500 Afghans questioned, 70% said they
believed Afghanistan was going in the right direction - a big jump
from 40% a year ago…
