Hey folks, we're just about a week away from the "scheduled" date for the next meeting. That is, it's coming up on Wednesday, Nov 7.

I know we've fallen down on the job, a bit, so I'd really like to make an effort to get something together that's of interest to you. If any of you have topics you'd like to discuss or speak on, I'd love to hear it. A few possible ideas:

  • more discussion of Akka or other concurrency libraries/frameworks (I'd love for an in-depth discussion of Finagle to happen at some point)
  • we could play around, as a group, with Scalatron (http://scalatron.github.com)
  • we could discuss more about FP in general or focusing on specific topics as they relate to Scala (there have been a few interesting topics at PDXFunc, apparently, that might be worth covering)
  • any tools or libraries that one or more of you would like to demonstrate are always welcome subjects
Of course, other ideas are welcome, so feel free to speak up!

So.... no input from anyone?

I am quite new to this group and to Scala as well. Not sure if this is something that will be relevant to rest of the group, but something good to get started on Scala would be great. One of my friends is also looking forward to take this journey.

Irrespective of topics are for beginner or not, I would love to meet some Scala enthusiasts and discuss my ideas etc.

Great to hear from you, Vishal!

Newcomers (to both the group and Scala, of course) are very welcome! If we can manage to get it set up in time, working through some of the Scalatron exercises in groups, or something along those lines, would be perfect for beginners, but hopefully still engaging enough for everyone else, as well. I'll see if I can make that happen, though my schedule is pretty booked between now and then.

If anyone else wants to suggest ideas that would be appropriate or try to get Scalatron running on a system they could bring to the meeting, that would be welcome, of course! Either way, there are always at least a couple newcomers and we're generally all happy to discuss topics that are accessible to any level. Let us know if there's anything in particular you'd like to hear about!

I could maybe talk about:
  New features in Scalatra?
Parsing lift-json responses from databinder dispatch w/ scalaz helpers?
  Mocking w/ ScalaMock?

I still want to work through http://apocalisp.wordpress.com/2010/06/08/type-level-programming-in-scala/ with some other folks at some point.  If there is interest we could go through one or two posts per meeting.  It could be fun to have a couple of these types of group study and discussion running over multiple meetings.

Could also be interesting to view a presentation or two with discussion afterwards from http://skillsmatter.com/event/scala/scala-days-2012 or similar.  Flipped classroom style could also be a possibility; watch a ahead of time, then discuss and work through related examples at the meeting.

I'm out of town next week, but at an upcoming meeting I'd be willing to talk about our experiences migrating to SBT at Gilt.

I'm generally enthusiastic about anything Scala-related, so that all sounds good to me -- especially the subjects of Akka and Scalatron.

Kevin, that sounds great. I'll be sure to ping you before next month's meeting to see if you're able to make it for that one.

Those are great ideas, Dave. I'll see if I can download a couple possible videos ahead of time and we can keep those as options for the meeting.

I think the type-level programming stuff might be a bit too heady for some of us, but who knows. Perhaps we should give it a try. ;~)
