This sounds remarkably like UTi. (I mention this in a probably futile attempt to forestall the inevitable hate-thread.)

What kind of crazy job title is "Sr. Software Engineer User Interface
Ruby JSON RubyMine"? It's Position, Interaction Model, Language, Data
Format, IDE? Really?

You nailed it, methinks.

UTi is, interestingly enough, a company that provides supply chain
analysis and logistics design. Given that, one might imagine that they
understand the role of supply and demand in markets.

Given that, as Markus said at the meeting, the demand for Rubyists is
high and the supply is limited, recruiters, goaded by the invisible
hand and the "visible foot", should be looking to improve their
chances.

How will they do so?

The smart ones will develop idioms that do not alienate. See Brad
Heller as a model.

They will also offer good wage rates and/or ancillary benefits.

They will also demonstrate a certain amount creativity and
flexibility.

Until such time as the foot or hand "touches" them.....

OK, but give her +3 for using "using" instead of "i mean 'use' but want
to sound important/technical"
