Well the site (rebuild on Word Press) is up and running

http://pdxphp.org/2010/01/misc/welcome-to-our-new-home/

The old site is still up at origins.pdxphp.org (posting should be turned off though) Just there for posterity

Looking forward to pdxphp in 2010,  look for more changes

cheers,

thanks for the feedback Igal,

I agree with you on all points,  havn't looked at Super Cache,  I'll follow up on that and the recommendations from YSlow/PageSpeed

I see i also have a tweak needed for the job posting page (it's listing all comments , not just the job posting comments)

regards,
sam

Sam,

Congrats on the site relaunch.

Some feedback on the new site:
- Pages load slowly, did you install the Super Cache plugin and such?
- The old site had a "mission" explaining what PDXPHP was up front, the
new site kinda hides this information away under an unobtrusive "about"
tab. Maybe just provide the mission near the top of the homepage in a
fixed place again but with a "more" link to the "about" page instead?
- The old site listed future meetings very clearly at the top of the
homepage, the new site kinda hides these away under a small sidebar
category. Also, a link for meetings should be as prominent or more so
than the job listings.

Best wishes,

-igal

Sam,

The SuperCache plugin renders WordPress articles to files on the
server's disk, which can then be served very quickly as-is by the web
server without talking to PHP at all. Installing requires fussing with
annoying .htaccess files, needs you to provide write access to the disk
for the process running the app, and you will periodically have to
forcefully clear the cache because it didn't get updated for some
reason. Despite these issues, the plugin is very helpful because it
helps serve pages very quickly while consuming very few resources:
