I submitted a proposal for nodepdx (https://github.com/nodepdx/nodepdx.github.com/blob/master/proposals/ignite_lightning_style_talks ) and haven’t gotten an actual approval, but assuming it goes through, I’ll be organizing one hour-long session full of people doing short (say about 5 minute) ignite/lightning talks.  I figure I’ll need about 6 others to fill the hour (I’ll do one myself).

So, while it’s totally possible this won’t actually happen, I’m posting this here because if it DOES happen, I want to make sure I can get others involved to give talks.  If you want to do a short session (perhaps you don’t have enough material or ambition for a full session), then please contact me and we can tentatively plan to have you do it.

Feel free to contact me with any questions.

Thanks,

Phillip

Hi Phillip!

You're on my list of people to contact, but haven't gotten to yet. :)

We're totally planning on doing lightning talks. I have a 40 minute block on the schedule allocated for that. It would be awesome if you'd like to organize it. Usually we leave it up to spontaneous self-inclusion on the day-of, but since it will only be one day (the first day), and just after lunch on the schedule, that's not a lot of time to prepare.

There are two people who I've spoken two that are considering doing lightening talks: Charlie Key (zwigby) and Nick Niemeir (nrn). If we run a tight ship, 40 minutes is enough time to do 8 lightning talks.

The best way I've found to organize that is:
a) use a host laptop for slides, to avoid setup time and have each person give you slides in keynote/PDF form
b) give them a bit obvious timer to watch during their talk, so they can correctly manage their time.
c) queue everyone up ahead of time and have them ready to jump on stage with no down time in between

If things are run that way, we can get 8 talks into the 40 minutes slot (or more if some folks have shorter topics than 5mins). Would you be willing to manage that whole process?

Thanks,
Troy

Great—that sounds good.  So far I think we have 4—your two, me, and Jesse Hallett just emailed me.

I don’t think it’s possible to do 8 in 40 minutes though. If the time slot were right before lunch we could go over a few minutes and not break everything.  But, whichever—I can shoot for 7 slots.

Anyway, sure, I can organize it.

Thanks,
Phillip

You can fit eight in, if you use an ignite format.

But it take lots of practice

It’s confirmed that we’ll have TWO lightning talk sessions at nodepdx.org

Thursday May 16th from 2:30 – 2:50

Friday May 17th from 1:10 – 1:50

I want to encourage everyone to consider doing one!  It’s a great challenge but it’s also in a supportive environment.

I created this repository as a way to keep a running list of who all is planning on talking:

https://github.com/phillipkerman/lightning_talks_nodepdx_2013

Please either email me or add a document to the proposal above (and do a pull request).

I’ll basically make sure we have a schedule and (hopefully) all the slides for everyone’s presentation on my laptop.

Thanks,
Phillip
