So, some of you may already know that I'm planning on doing a 3D modeling class at the silo. Right now I'm seeing how many people would be interested, and if having machines set up there for those without is gonna be a super needed thing.

SO, if you ARE interested in learning how to 3D Model, whether just simply enough to use the printer, or continue on to learn texturing and animation as well, leave a reply with your email, and on what day would work the best for you for a weekly class.

Any day work great for me, as long as it's after seven PM. I'll have any class details (curriculum and jazz) set up by next week.
I'll be asking for a small monetary pitch so that we can get some pizzas or something while we do this. Food is a great aid in the learning process.

Aaanywho, if you supplied your email on the signup board at the silo, or here, I'll keep you posted as things progress.

I'm interested - it's a lot easier for me to consider since I work downtown now.

Do we have to be members to take the class? I'm not, but I'd be willing to pitch in a bit more on top of pizza money to support the space.

I wouldn't think it'd be a problem for non members to come to the 3D class.
And as far as supporting the space, I already pay my forty a month which technically should cover whatever I'm doing there, BUT just in case, it wouldn't be a bad idea for non members to bring five bucks to throw in a pot for the space or something.
Someone who pays bills have any input on that?

The original rule I always heard quoted was that you need to be a member to host a class, but any random person can attend.

That said, encouraging people to toss a couple of bucks into the donation box probably would be appreciated.

I've been looking to make things with a 3D printer for a long time, so please count me in. Tuesdays are an open night for me, and I think the silo as well?

To extend what Ken said, the general rule is:

(1) You must be a member to host a class
(2) Attendees do not need to be members
(3a) If the host is not making a profit (i.e., free event, or just charging for materials), there is no fee for hosting the event, but we do ask that you suggest that your non-member attendees donate towards the space.
(3b) If the host is making a profit, we ask that the host give a share of profits to BrainSilo

The rational behind this rule is that hosting events further's BrainSilo's core mission of providing a space for learning and experimentation.  This isn't a formal rule (we don't really have formal rules), just a "this is what has worked so far".

Loki, that sounds perfect and reasonable. The moment I intend to turn a profit I will let you guys know. Otherwise I'll just try and get some money in the box and food for the time spent there.
As far as a night goes, I'd like to wait until we have a consensus on what day will work best for everyone.

I'm horrible at using google groups, if you guys could PLEASE email me at patdan...@hotmail.com I'll be able to keep track of anyone who wants in a lot better. I'm not that good with "me toos".
That being said, I'll still post here with information.
I'm off to work for the night, will check on this when I return.

I think we are in a great position to build a computer lab in the back that could be used for the 3D modeling class and other classes. Then we can clear out that other hardware that is collecting dust. It would be sweet if we could acquire about 10 computers that could be used to learn "hands on". I know some of us have there own laptops, but that may change a month from now. I can approach Free Geek about this and file the grant, I can pick up the hardware and tell them about our purpose.

I don't need much to make this happen, or at least get the ball rolling. Just tell me what you think.

Ten computers is definitely too many. Five would easily be enough based on how many people bring their own machines. Also, there's not enough room for ten people to sit at a machine in that back room. If that's not enough, then we can compensate in the future. We need to avoid adding more shit we aren't gonna use to the silo.

We'd be getting rid of computers that aren't working and replace them with computers that are.  As for the room, nothings perfect, not all of them need to be in the back, 10 still may be too many. You do have a good point, there is no need for equipment that wont be used. These computers could be used in a lot of different ways, Wednesdays Exploit Workshop maybe?

I'd love to get familiar with the basic techniques - Mondays, Tuesdays and Fridays work best.

Alright, right now it's looking like this'll be going down Tuesdays at seven.  I'll be solidifying details tomorrow night during the open house.
