[ Add this event to your calendar: http://calagator.org/events/1250461710 ]

The next meeting of pdxfunc is coming up next week. Do you have a
presentation, quick talk, discussion topic or a burning question about
functional programming? If so, please prepare and reply, or mention it
at the beginning of the meeting so we can add you to the agenda.
Remaining meeting time will be spent on group discussions of a variety
of functional programming topics. Don't miss out!

VENUE: We'll be meeting at Janrain Headquarters, 519 SW 3rd Ave Ste
600, Portland, OR 97204. This meeting's venue is kindly sponsored by
Janrain <http://www.janrain.com/>, providers of hosted user management
solutions for social login and sharing, single sign-on and social
profile storage.

ABOUT THE GROUP: Join programmers, researchers and enthusiasts to
discuss functional programming. pdxfunc is a study/user group
exploring the world of functional programming, based in Portland,
Oregon. The group welcomes programmers interested in all functional
languages, including Haskell, Erlang, OCaml, Clojure, and others. The
group meets regularly for presentations, demos and discussions
applicable to all skill levels, from newbies and experts. The meetings
are usually on the second Monday of the month.

Just a thought...

Like a book club reads and discusses a book, what about looking at a
language or framework and discussing it at the meeting?

Opa is a functional web dev language with some very interesting
features especially for real-time web app development.
http://opalang.org/
I like the idea that they consider the web a target of sorts - Opa
programs compile down to one single executable that includes the DB,
the client code, services and collateral. Makes deployment very easy.
And it's statically typed.

But I only did web dev for about 9 months last year. Opa looks like
it would have been great for developing the real-time web app we
developed in Javascript (serverside ran on node.js). It would be
interesting to hear what others with a lot more experience in the web
dev arena think of it. Kick the tires. Go through their chat app
tutorial. Then we could discuss pros & cons at the next meeting
perhaps?

Oh, if there's something already scheduled, we could do the Opa
discussion next month... not entirely sure I can make it this month
anyway.

Wow, looks like I'll have to stop being just a lurker this month and show up to a meeting

Opa sounds interesting to me, I like the DSLeyness of it with the
embedded HTML at first glance.

If there is time, I would like to show off my attempt to implement type classes in JavaScript.

Jesse was going to show this before. I'm definitely interested. Can we
bump this one up?

Carl and Jesse, about how much time would you like for your presentations? Would about an hour and a half for Carl, and half an hour for Jesse be reasonable?

I can start the meeting at 7pm sharp and keep the intro short to maximize the amount of time for the talks, and the awesome Janrain staff may let us stay after 9pm, so my guess is that we can fit both in.

Half an hour would be a good amount of time for me.

Fufferin' fiddlesticks - seems I'm doomed to miss any event announced
on this list, lately. I'll be in Boston til Tuesday. Seems the
airline charges $150 it you wanna change your ticket. :(
Could we skype it or something?

Reminder that we have a meeting tonight.

Tonight's presentations:
* Carl Howells will tell us about the Snap Framework <http://snapframework.com/> he's been working on, it's a web framework for Haskell that features an HTTP server library using a highly-concurrent backend, HTML-based templating system, and mechanism for creating modular web applications.
* Jesse Hallett will show off his attempt to implement type classes in JavaScript

Also, can anyone please record audio or video of the meeting for Leif?

See you soon,

-igal

I can make an artist's depiction. Is that good enough? :)

Every meeting should result in an xkcd-style comic summary.
