I wanted to let everyone in the Portland DevOps User Group know that
we'll be having the first PDX Puppet User Group meeting on May 6.

You can join the Google Group to get notifications about meetings,
discuss agendas, etc. https://groups.google.com/group/pdx-puppet

Details:
* When: May 6 from 6:30pm - 8:30pm
* Where: Puppet Labs 926 NW 13th Ave #210, Portland, OR
* Who: Puppet users and anyone interested in learning more about Puppet.

Agenda:
* 6:30 - 7:00: Eat pizza
* 7:00 - 8:00: Puppet Overview / Q&A with Luke Kanies (Founder of Puppet)
* 8:00 - 8:30: TBD??

As you can see, we still have some room on the agenda for another
talk. If you have an idea for what you would like to see or if you
want to volunteer to present, please post those ideas on
https://groups.google.com/group/pdx-puppet or contact me.

Thanks!

Hey Dawn,

I'm a little curious about what the value of having a separate puppet-specific group is. It seems like this will mostly just end up siphoning puppet content away from PDX DevOps and reduce opportunities for cross-pollination. :(

I think that we have plenty of room for both.

Having a PDX Puppet UG gives us a dedicated place where we can have
1-2 talks every month for people who are interested in Puppet
technologies.

I would also like to have more Puppet talks at the PDX DevOps group
and will continue to encourage people to submit talks to PDX DevOps,
too.

Thanks. I really hope that there's enough content to sustain both groups well into the future.

It does seem to be a solution in search of a problem.

Having just come from the NY area, I can say that we had separate Puppet and DevOps groups as well as UGs for a bunch of other CM tools.  It's actually a nice thing - the DevOps group tends to be a much more open discussion about general issues around CI, policy, managing organization structure, etc, while the Puppet UG was a better place for discussing very specific Puppet issues that would bore the heck out of the general DevOps group.

For instance, "scaling PuppetDB" would be a really boring talk for a certain percentage of a DevOps group, but it's like red meat for a Puppet group.  Both groups had really full meetings every time around and there was a surprisingly large group that were in one but not the other.  We maintained close connections between the leadership of both groups and encouraged folks to attend the other group as often as we could.
