The HISTORY OF FASHIONS, written by Rosana Pistolese
(Director, Accademia de Costume e di Moda) and Ruth Horsting
(Associate Professor of Art, University of California, Davis).
Published by John Wiley & Sons, Inc., 1970

Wonderful book on the study of historical costume. "From
the first forms of attire the people of antiquity found convenient,
the costume evolved and became accepted by successive
generations. The costume represents the distinctive character
of a country, of a person, and always mirrors the evolution of
human civilization. It reveals the uniqueness of each society, and
the character of the person who wears it".

Profusely illustrated, each selection represents examples of the
history of fashion, according to art, culture, and the society that
determined it. An attempt was made to illustrate each period
by reproducing appropriate works from the greatest art available.
The authors belief was that whoever designs and creates costumes
must look to the ideals of other societies, and must seek to capture
their motifs in order to recreate them into new and different images.

Special terminology (foreign names for the different elements of
costume) are commonly used, in this book, to aquaint the reader
with the vocabulary used by people working in field of fashion
or theater costuming. As the fashion industry and development
of costuming began early in France and Italy, this is where much
of the universally accepted vocabulary of costume design originated.

Well researched study of the field of fashion, from the very early
days of Mesopotamia through the twentieth century. Wonderful
information for interpretation of theatrical costumes, or the creation
of contemporary fashions. EXPIRES Saturday, November 13th.
