I just did a clean install of Windows 7 Home Premium 64 on my Vista 64
machine.

After the Windows 7 installed successfully, I used PC MOVER to copy my
programs and files from my XP machine to the 7 machine, just like I
did when it was a new Vista computer a few months ago.

Everything went fine EXCEPT for opening some folders; when clicking on
a FOLDER on the Windows 7 machine, rather then opening Windows
Explorer, it opens an OLD version of JASC (not Corel) Paint Shop Pro
8. This happened even if I opened the "set your default programs",
which also opened Paint Shop Pro, rather than opening the default
program manager.

I uninstalled the JASC Paint Shop Pro 8, and now if I click on "Set
Default Programs" it says, "This file does not have a program
associated with it for performing this action. Please install a
default program or, if one is already installed, create an association
in the Default Programs control panel."

I am in an infinite loop. If I go to CONTROL PANEL - DEFAULT PROGRAMS
it says precisely the same thing.

Any suggestions on how I can get my DEFAULT PROGRAMS utility to load
so I can set my file associations?

Thanks!

Ira

If I right click on a folder and OPEN it opens, but if I LEFT click on
a folder it gives me the error above.

FOLLOW UP 2:

If I go to ANYTHING in CONTROL PANEL, I get the SAME error:

"This file does not have a program associated with it for performing
this action. Please install a
default program or, if one is already installed, create an association
in the Default Programs control panel."

How do I restore the CONTROL PANEL in Windows 7 Home Premium 64?

Thanks!

I can get to CONTROL PANEL - DEFAULT PROGRAMS by right clicking and
then clicking on OPEN.

I looked at all of the file associations, and several are listed as
"unknown".

Do any of you know what I would look for in DEFAULT PROGRAMS to
associate with folders, Explorer, Control panel, etc. to be able to
open with a LEFT click?

Thanks!

This is why I never use programs like that. The safest way to migrate to a new PC is to restore files from a backup, and reinstall your apps.

The only fix for this is to reinstall your apps.  The registry entries are incorrect.

RBL is right. You would be better off doing an upgrade from Vista to
Windows 7 rather than what you did as the OS are so similar I have
done it successfully twice though if you don't do what he said, there
will always be something amiss.

Thanks.

I was one of the 3% that had a catastrophic failure while upgrading
from Vista Home Premium 64 to Windows 7 Home Premium 64.

I have been going round and round with Microsoft since late last
October. I sent them my upgrade error logs as requested, which they
acknowledged receiving.
Despite a multitude of emails and other contacts, MS never got back
with me about a fix for my problem. There some other fixes posted on
the Windows 7 support site, but none worked.

After waiting for 5 months, I did a clean install from the upgrade
disc.

I used the upgraded 64 bit version of PC MOVER to move my XP files to
the newly installed Windows 7 machine, just as I did on the same
computer when I bought it with Vista Home Premium 64 in July.

PC Mover reported no errors with the transfer, but somehow a few of my
file associations were corrupted.

I just found a website with Vista 64 file association fix utilities
that I am going to try on my Windows 7 machine.

Look at: http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/233243-default-file-type-associations-restore.html

FIXED!!!!!

The http://www.sevenforums.com file association links FIXED the
problem.

BTW according to the Microsoft Support Forums, the file association
error
happened to others who installed Windows 7, not just me!

Now I will have to spend more time on http://www.sevenforums.com
snooping for other
tips and ideas.

Thanks to all for your help and ideas.

I meant to say upgrades on 64 bit I had no luck with, only 32 bit.

You would save yourself a lot of time if you simply backed up your personal data, reinstalled Windows, restored your data, and reinstalled your apps.

That's my method.
In fact I only  install my apps as I need them.
I always end up with less apps and newer versions too.
All things considered it does save time.
I have done this on many computers.

THAT is the ultimate defrag and registry cleaning tactic.

Same here.  I'm actually doing this as we speak.  I'm setting up a new laptop that I plan to migrate to.  Putting Win7 on it.  Then will restore my personal folders using Karen's Replicator.  Then will install apps as I need them.

Almost done. Just have to install Open Office and .. I think I am done.
99% of what he does is web based .. makes things pretty streamline.

I've had it for a while, but I love it. I made the mistake of switching off of it, and I don't care for the new one, so I cam switching back. Gateway FX. Only complaint I have about it is the battery life, which is minimal. But the machine is fab.

Setup new laptop.

Step 0: (may be skipped, depending). If the operating system I want isn't installed on the laptop, install it.
Step 1: Install VMware
Step 2: Copy virtual machines to new laptop

Done.

David
