I was wondering how prevalent this is. I never had it happen to me
until today.

I wanted to add additional memory to a Dell Laptop and I went on the
Dell website to check out via Service Tag what I needed. I did not
intend to buy from the site since I thought I could do better
elsewhere. I visited the support site for the laptop and was suprised
to see the 2 GB Corsair memory at $75.00 each, BUT with a $30.00
rebate per. Thinking I couldn't do much better than this, I ordered
two of these modules.

I did see a reference to the $30.00 rebate again during checkout as it
explained that it was a mail-in, but I didn't see anything about how
or when to apply during the rest of the checkout and I became
suspicious. I tried to look up the rebate on the Dell site and I did
not find any Corsair $30.00 rebates in effect. There had been one that
expired 2/28/2010, but nothing current. I went back to the original
Dell site and low and behold, the 2 GB Corsair modules were gone! They
weren't even listed without rebate, simply vanished. I had (have) the
order acknowledgement of them so I have proff they were there when I
ordered.

I called Dell Customer Care and they confirmed no rebate. I cancelled
and that's it. I am just wondering if anyone else ever had similar and
whether its conspiracy or error? It seemed rather strange.

I had something almost similar with Amazon when I purchased my Dragon NaturallySpeaking. However, I immediately called and they notified me that they had just withdrawn it at the same time I was trying to capture it. However, Amazon made good on it. Good company.

Yeah, it could very well be that they didn't get around to changing
the site until the very time you were ordering.

Often you can go to the manufacturer site to look for rebates too.
Here's a link to Corsair's when bought thru Dell:

A stab in the dark, but could the next-to-last on the list be a $30
March rebate for the memory you wanted? CGM2X2GS800 G

If there is a published rebate special whatever it MUST be honored I believe
that is well settled law.
