what good is win7 event viewer if it has no search function !!!?

I think it does have a search function. I recall searching many times.
On Linux at the moment installing a VM image, so I can't check.

Doesn't have search, per se, but it does have custom views that can be used like search.

How to Search for a Specific Log Event

To search for a specific log event, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, and then click Control Panel. Click Performance and Maintenance, then click Administrative Tools, and then double-click Computer Management. Or, open the MMC containing the Event Viewer snap-in.
  2. In the console tree, expand Event Viewer, and then click the log that contains the event that you want to view.
  3. On the View menu, click Find.
  4. Specify the options for the event that you want to view in the Find dialog box, and then click Find Next.

Following the instructions below in Windows 7, the only items that show up in the View menu are:

* Show Analytic and Debug Logs
* Preview Pane (default checked)
* Sort by >
* Group by >
* Customize

No Find
