But I am still testing.
I have possibly found the problem!!!!!
The machine in question is of the uefi variety. it does not apparently  work 
with the compression programs, gzip or xz, it produces the wrong size iso or 
squashfs. On other machines test 5 produces the correct size squashfs and iso.
